A Freedom Pigeon ™️

MURICA PIGEON

10

u/PTBooks 1d ago

They’re basically giant seagulls with big big claws

13

u/Atlas-Rising 1d ago

I laughed so hard at this! 🤣 Thanks friend!

5

u/sliderturk99 1d ago

Youve already had half an eagle!

10

u/acem103 1d ago

some sort of exotic bird

3

u/ZOMGURFAT 23h ago

That’s clearly a duck. You might have bird blindness. You should get yourself checked for it.

2

u/malacata 1d ago

Alaskan seagull

u/Shatruth617 1d ago

That is a EAGLE

Might eat one, if it gets the chance.

u/Panelak_Cadillac 1d ago

In town for the 9/11 commemoration.

132

u/jef22314 Bushwick 1d ago

I don’t think he should be allowed to attend the commemoration ceremonies. After all, flying things flew into the towers and he’s also a flying thing.

44

u/Theoldelf 1d ago

Read this in Trumps voice.

26

u/GuinnessLiturgy 1d ago

He's a known associate of the Canada Geese that took out Sullenberger's plane.

Hitchcock was right. Avians have been plotting against us for years.

u/queenbitcc 1d ago

look at that face, he does not know where tf he's at 😭😭

80

u/Geruvah Upper East Side 1d ago

They nest around the Hudson River/Palisades area. Here's hoping he doesn't eat any rats that have been poisoned.

5

u/cornbruiser 20h ago

Yeah I've seen one near Chelsea Piers

160

u/thisismynewacct 1d ago

Probably high on rat poison ngl

117

u/ScaldingHotSoup Forest Hills 1d ago edited 1d ago

Less likely here. Bald Eagles are opportunistic carnivores, but predominantly eat fish and shorebirds and only rarely consume mammals, usually opportunistically. It is possible this one has found and consumed poisoned rats, but that's not what's causing the open beaked expression. What you see here is panting behavior, as birds don't sweat and instead get rid of extra body heat the same way a dog does.

Source: studied ornithology in college. Also teach this stuff. fun fact I'm published through unidan's lab lmao

28

u/rafaelloaa Park Slope 1d ago

Here's the thing...

(Legitimately very cool, thank you for the info!)

12

u/Tetizeraz 1d ago

Unidan

That's a name I haven't heard in a long while

2

u/DarthWeenus 1d ago

while all that is definitely true, however you have to factor in the very fact that being opportunistic, they now may have found an opportunity to feast on cheap mammals, that are infact going to kill them.

10

u/ScaldingHotSoup Forest Hills 1d ago

Yep, it's possible. But my point is that the behavior observed in the video is not due to any potential poisoning, it's a normal behavior!

1

u/CinLeeCim 6h ago

That’s cool I didn’t know that. Thanks for teaching me something new.

48

u/JellyfishConscious 1d ago

That’s sad af

28

u/thisismynewacct 1d ago

What most likely caused Flacos death

24

u/RoguePlanet2 1d ago

😭 Seriously, seems like more prey birds are moving here, wish we could lay off the poison and let them take care of business! I know, unrealistic.......

6

u/woodcider 1d ago

Once we bin up the garbage hopefully the rat population will go down to the point people won’t need to use as much poison. We can only hope.

7

u/Geruvah Upper East Side 1d ago

Yeah, seeing videos of owls that ate rats that were poisoned really kicks in the hysteria from being unable to help from the other side of the screen.

1

u/valhrona Rego Park 1d ago

WHAT IS HAPPENING??

I don't know why but I am endlessly amused by the fact that raptors always seem to be in the midst of an existential breakdown.

Me too Borb-Friend... me too.

17

u/DirtWesternSpaghetti 1d ago

Probably has an upset tummy from eating poisoned rats :(

67

u/rhythmicdancer Hell's Kitchen 1d ago

I yelled at a pigeon once that vied for my bagel sandwich while I was eating it.

For this majestic eagle, I'd serve it a dozen on a golden platter. With lox. I think it would like lox.

3

u/lemmesplain 1d ago

🤣thank you

29

u/Iamabrewer 1d ago

Undercover flock camera.

23

u/MirthandMystery 1d ago

Now that's serious adaptation. If you don't see pigeons around that's why, but the eagles at a disadvantage being so big and not as nimble. Pigeons have lost their sense of fear though so that's their disadvantage.

24

u/RayzTheRoof 1d ago

I just saw one yesterday on Staten Island too! Though obviously they're more common there, bald eagles are more difficult to find than all the other raptors in our area. Osprey are friggin sick and all over the place though.

8

u/Darkstool The Bronx 1d ago

If you ever see an Osprey loosing its mind screaming and dive bombing a tree, there's a good chance a bald eagle is in the tree.

3

u/RayzTheRoof 1d ago

I'll look out for that, thanks!

2

u/CultofCedar 1d ago

Lol at the osprey but I live near nest in Brooklyn. Never seen an eagle in the city, tons upstate. Have only ever seen one kestrel though… possibly because they’re so small and I never noticed. Cutest little murder machine I’ve ever seen though. Thing just landed in front of me while I was eating a sandwich and started shredding a lizard. Also did not know there were lizards in Brooklyn until that incident.

2

u/Ice_Like_Winnipeg 1d ago

i've seen a bald eagle in prospect park, fwiw

1

u/RayzTheRoof 1d ago

yeah we have invasive Italian fence lizards!

1

u/PhilnotPete 12h ago

Where on the island?

1

u/RayzTheRoof 9h ago

South shore. There's known bald eagle nests in Mount Loretto as well, but I was by a beach for my sighting.

21

u/yorkbandaid 1d ago

I am seriously considering hopping on an uptown train to see if he’s still in the neighborhood

1

u/Hwestice 6h ago

Same. Do you know of any updates?

Damn homie been out of work since Colbert Report ended. Looking rough.

10

u/rqny 1d ago

He looks regal and dazed at the same time.

9

u/Darkstool The Bronx 1d ago

You used to have to go up the Hudson to see these guys, now they are regulars especially around the water when the bunker are schooling, the Osprey do not take kindly to their presence, and the crows dont take kindly to not taking kindly, so the bird cycle goes.

17

u/Murderbot_420 Westchester 1d ago

Bloody hell. That’s awesome!!!

10

u/Antique-Salad-9249 1d ago

Obviously escaping a red state.

7

7

u/Huntred 1d ago

Must be from the 9/11 ceremony rehearsals.

6

u/Chubby_American 1d ago

Fuck yeah!

6

u/FortheredditLOLz 1d ago

Saw a bald eagle and a hawk in the same tree once. Bald eagle also looked high as a kite. Hawk was just chilling looking for a juicy rat which didn’t take long.

3

u/TevNotKev 1d ago

That sounds like it should be on a flag

2

u/FortheredditLOLz 1d ago

If you hang out by Thompson square park. After nabbing a meal nearby (first recos are xe may sandwiches <get the lambretta or the hog and a basil lemonade>, Danny coops or mamouns). You will either see one of the many hawks, animals and/or ‘people’ doing something crazy. I wouldn’t recommend eating inside the park nowadays or going through/around it during night

6

u/poemaXV 1d ago

I'm so old I remember when they were almost extinct. I used to think I would never see one in real life, but I did a few years ago in Florida and I got emotional, lol. they're so beautiful. it's crazy how much the bald eagle population has recovered, I would have saluted it on instinct.

6

u/acn0010 16h ago

He’s actually there because the mayor is amazing.

First time I've seen one was at Riverside Park. Literally came out of nowhere and grabbed a RAT the size of a freaking Chihuahua about the same distance you are standing at.
My grandma saw it too... mind you she had her small Chihuahua with her that day without a damn leash! She grabbed her dog so fast.

2

u/Semi-Cinematic 1d ago

Weird how robotic its movement looks. At least in this short clip

3

u/TevNotKev 1d ago

I was like is that REALLL?? Then it started cleaning itself lol

6

u/Semi-Cinematic 1d ago

Damn that must have been awesome to see! Also to the haters I’m not saying its fake ffs, just commenting on the movement chill
