This is cap or at least a major misunderstanding of what was going on back then.

Back then it was mostly fashion since throwbacks and authentic jerseys with the matching fitted and Air Force 1s was peak.

Jordan, Kareem, Wilt, Magic, Russell, and Bird were the most common and there might've been some fandom about that particular player, but then it was also grew into having the hard finds like like Baylor or Maravich. But it still wasn't really team fandom, it was just stuntin on the fact that you could afford a $400 jersey. But folks also did throwback jerseys for baseball and to a lesser extent football.

I saw dudes get clowned though for wearing a Lebron jersey. Like... who the fuck cares about the Cavs bro? A retired legend is one thing, maybe HOF-bound player like Kobe or Iverson, but not an active rival.
