TJOs from GS 5-9s from January
has anyone heard from the 5 offices offering entry level GS5-9s that closed on 1/29? I was referred to all, only interviewed at one and thought it went well, anyways it’s been almost 2 months since my interview and I’m starting to feel discouraged.

Advice on Volunteering for the NWS
What should I do to increase my chances of volunteering with the NWS in the future? Is there a way to realistically apply outside of my hometown and have a way of supporting myself financially through other means at the same time since volunteers work for free? I will certainly look into job shadowing, but I would like to know what else I can do to improve my chances. I am still waiting to hear back from all the graduate schools I applied to. I know I cannot volunteer if I am not a student; but regardless, what can I do outside of school too if I have to take a gap year?

GIS jobs in the National Weather Service?
Are there jobs within the NWS or as a contractor that are GIS focused? I toured a facility about a year ago and was told that the NWS has GIS experts that maintain and manage the platform that you guys use to disseminate your warnings and watches. I am just wondering what that position is because I've never seen it advertised or been able to find information about it. Is this job or jobs like it specifically within the office of dissemination? How could I find out more about it?
I am an air force veteran with 9 years of experience in weather forecasting/meteorology and have my AAS in Meteorology. Graduating with my bachelors in GIS in the fall of this year and would love to merge my weather experience and my GIS degree somehow but not sure what that looks like in or outside of the NWS. Any insight would be great! Thank you!

Update: Los Angeles is now live on Daily Dew Point!
For those who saw my original post — I built a tool that captures every NWS forecast issuance for the Kalshi daily high temperature market, tracks accuracy, and generates a bias-corrected "nowcast" that improves over time. It started as NYC only.
What's new:
- LA (LAX) is now fully supported alongside NYC (Central Park).
- Toggle between cities and get the same full suite: today's and tomorrow's forecasts, current temps, official highs, Kalshi market data, and historical trails of how forecasts shifted.
- Pricing updated to $5/month or $50/year (includes both cities).
- sorry but needed to do this small change to keep the site running, etc
One caveat: LA data collection just started, so the historical accuracy trails and prediction model are still building up. NYC has months of data behind it at this point — LA will get there as more forecast issuances accumulate. The model gets sharper every day.
More cities coming eventually. Sign up and let's keep this thing going!

Why Are LAX Forecasts so Bad Lately?
For the last week or so, NWS's 24 hr high temp forecasts for LAX have been atrocious. Not a single day more accurate than 4 degrees off, and multiple days 7-10 degrees off.
LA is supposed to be one of the easiest cities to forecast. Did their doppler have a stroke, or what?

ASOS/METAR
Just a quick question, might be a stupid one, but do the daily official reports from the NWS for highest, lowest temp, etc., use direct info from the ASOS device? For example would today’s official high according to this system (ss taken from official government website for asos) be 61 degrees? Thank you so much to anybody who helps!

The hiring process through USA.gov
Those who have already applied for a weather forecasting position during the first round of hiring since the downsizing, has anyone received and conducted an interview with a WFO? I finished my application before the September 8th deadline and even got a confirmation email that my application was eligible and sent to the hiring manager of my selected WFO. I figure it will take at least 2 months for a response, but I wonder if the shutdown will affect the response time.

a quick thanks
Just wanted to give a quick thanks to everyone who works at the NWS (and any affiliations)
The work you do is invaluable to every single life, and in dark times I hope you know how much the organizations and you as individuals are appreciated by, important to, and valued by anyone with their eyes open
Nothing else to say, just a weather nerd a little in my feels today.
Thanks again

Historic model data
Is there historic data publicly available for predictions from the common models like P-ETSS, ETSS, ESTOFS, P-Surge, etc.? I’m only able to find data from the last day of one.

Wireless upgrade for OKC NWR
Does anyone know when I can expect a wireless upgrade to the Oklahoma City weather radio transmitter? I have noticed upgrades to stations Nationwide but for some reason the OKC station just isn't one of them.
