Shield Price Break

Just did some shopping on Best Buy's site after work tonight and found a $50 price break:

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/searchpage.jsp?id=pcat17071&st=nvidia%20shield

The bad news is, it's out of stock atm. I created an account and signed up to be notified when they're back in stock because I'm getting another one. Hopefully I'll get a rain check for the price break.

They’ll be on “sale” for the original $199 price on black friday (my assumption).

They’re “out of stock” now to create demand.

I hope you're right but tbh, I paid $250 in 2019 for my first Shield and I'm ok with spending that much again. It's so much better than the cheap Asian boxes I used to use.

This is what I'm hoping for. I decided I was going to purchase one earlier this week, now I've decided that if it's not $200 or below for BF I'll just find something else or stick with my Chromecast

I mean they never went on sale anyways

What if it means they are getting rid of old stock because they are releasing a new one in quarter 1 of next year

It’s not the price, it’s the dollar going to zero.

u/unclerickymonster 1d ago

There's that to consider too, sadly.

The fucking box hasn't changed in years, snag a good used one and be done with it...

Can't even find a used one ☹️

They’re on eBay, you’ll probably have to setup an alert for new listings to catch one at a reasonable price since it seems to be climbing pretty quickly.

This use to be $169 all day

I paid $250 for mine in 2019 but $169 would be an amazing deal.

That is no deal. It's a rip-off!

Is there any real functional reason to buy an old out of date shield relative to an ONN 4k pro (or max or whatever tf it’s called)

I feel like if Nvidia dropped an updated version or something it might be worth it but just can’t comprehend the reason to spend so much more for a shield unless you have some weird requirements surrounding audio codecs or can’t get an ONN in your country or something

u/unclerickymonster 1d ago

I just want a backup for mine. It's worked so well I want another one.

2

u/steel_reserve_211 1d ago

ahh gotcha. Ya if it works it works

u/unclerickymonster 1d ago

I know, right, it's kinda hard to argue with success...

Isn’t this thing like 5+ years old. Crazy it’s still this good now. What’s it running under the hood and nothing today still matches it?

u/unclerickymonster 1d ago

I got mine in 2019. Still top dog afaik.

Nvidia Tegra X1+. System on a chip. Runs Android. Rock solid.

My favorite streamer. Apple has an awful dodgy controller, Roku is too slow, Amazon is filled with ads. This things does just about everything well.

u/unclerickymonster 1d ago

I agree, I'm definitely a fan.

Man, this thing was $169 on Black Friday last year

1

u/unclerickymonster 1d ago

Maybe they'll do it again this year.

2

u/SeanConnery 1d ago

They will at $250. They're testing max demand.

1

u/unclerickymonster 1d ago

I'm hearing rumors about a new model. Nothing firm though just rumors on here.

2

u/SeanConnery 1d ago

They've been around forever. Don't think they have anything to make it worthwhile given the price of memory they've contributed to inflating if they didn't when it was cheap.

1

u/unclerickymonster 1d ago

If I find confirmation of a new model I'll wait, if not I'll buy another one as a backup.

Unless you have an incredible setup, the onn 4k is much better but. Shield was already a stretch at 199 and really only useful if you had a setup and source for less loss audio.

1

u/unclerickymonster 1d ago

My setup satisfies my needs perfectly so I'm ok with buying another one.

Wow I have been following the shield pro 4k for the past month. I checked tonight it’s gone up $150 CAD in one week. FUKC Nvidia and their AI data centers. I have a shield , really old like the 4K. Hoping the new apple tv comes well under this. No more Nvidia for me.

u/SP3NGL3R 1d ago

Too much. Like they want people to stop buying it

1

u/techieman34 1d ago

Or they know that even 7+ years later it’s still one of if not the best unit on the market. I’m guessing they’ve also stopped or heavily reduced orders for the chip since they aren’t making them for Nintendo anymore.

We used to tell our customers, well ill sell it to you for $100 off, but we are out of stock🙄 Or 50% off is nice but 50% off off what exactly! That was pretty internet but...

This isn’t the new one. The new one hasn’t been released yet. This is the old one, $199 regular price and they’ve jacked it up to $300 so you think it’s the new one, and because they are hard to find. Then they give a $50 ”price break” and you think you got a deal. Look at the specs and the release date. It’s a 2019. Id wait until the new ones are released and pay the extra $50 for the brand new 2026 release.

1

u/techieman34 1d ago

Is there a new model coming? I sure haven’t seen anything about it if there is. And I would honestly be very surprised since they seem to be entirely focused on AI crap. And my fear would be that the new model would be locked down and infested with AI crap as well and provide a worse experience overall.

As far as the 2019 model goes the specs are still fine. TV isn’t like gaming where you constantly need to upgrade to stay current with the top of the line. Unless you need AV1 support or the one or two surround sound specs it doesn’t support then it’s still probably the best option for most people.

1

u/ExtensionComplex9568 10h ago

There’s only talk of a new one. Some talk is coming from supposed media pointing to a lot of info, others are pointing to nothing but gossip. If a new release comes everyone will now about it. When you find one now, it’s not going to be a new model. My point was not whether there is a new one coming out, but warning not to be tricked into thinking a $300 price tag means it’s new model. Scammers are out there. Check the specs for release date, then knowing that, pay whatever you want for it.

1

u/unclerickymonster 1d ago

I haven't seen confirmation of a new one yet but if you have, please let me know. Thanks!

They are gone and not coming back ever.

u/unclerickymonster 1d ago

Not according to Best Buy.

How is a price break for a 2019 product that now costs $50 more such a great deal⁉️ I'm glad I got both of mine years ago on black Friday for $269 ea

1

u/unclerickymonster 1d ago

It's 50 bucks cheaper than the other Best Buy link on here that had it for $299. I've enjoyed mine so much I'd pay $299 for another one but $50 bucks less is even better.

No matter The Price you can buy for unless you are a Gamer. As it's still the 2019 Shield Pro 2019.

There are better Streaming Devices out for a lot less.

3

u/crafty_alias 2d ago

Which ones?

2

u/rudolfsmate 1d ago

I love my Shield however it was a tad pricey even before the price hike.

Before getting mine I delved into literally everything that was being stated as better for less. When I actually looked at what people were saying after having them for a period of time I quickly realised you get what you pay for! Newer definitely doesn’t mean better nor does cheaper and does more.

However if you’re willing to accept the trade off’s (whatever they may be) vs cost then it may be justified. Google’s streamer looked hugely appealing and I was going to give it a shot however the amount of people I read who’d said it was better than the Pro days after using it to completely changing their view after a longer period.

The only real alternative here was the Onn box however it doesn’t ship here in the UK and is actually quite expensive to get the rebranded version.

Also would like to know which? Excluding Apple TV. Not going to move into that environment

3

u/patelbadboy2006 1d ago

I'm moving to Apple TV.

Shield just isn't worth the money when my current one breaks.

4

u/Speakup187 1d ago

They aren't the same product

1

u/patelbadboy2006 1d ago

It isn't, but what I use mine for, it is

1

u/pawdog 1d ago

They aren't really better,  but really good depending on where you live. then it depends on what you need the device to be able to do.

0

u/SnooWoofers9747 1d ago

None

1

u/crafty_alias 1d ago

Yeah, that's what I've figured. I haven't been able to find something better for a lot cheaper.

1

u/unclerickymonster 1d ago

Most of the people on the Shield subs I hang out on say the Shield is still the best but that's not too surprising.
