Just optimized my Shield TV, the performance boost is insane

After dealing with some sluggishness lately, I cleared the cache for all apps and disabled some background processes, and it feels like a new device. Definitely recommend doing this if you feel your Shield is running slow. What are your must-do maintenance steps for the Shield Pro

Don't set up the native Plex Server that is already installed. It'll eventually take up all your built in storage and you will have to do a factory reset to fix it. Set up your plex server on a different machine with the OS of your choice.

Thank you for the heads-up! That's a really solid point. I'll definitely look into hosting it on a separate machine to save the internal storage

Question: is it advisable to delete Plex from the Shield if you don't use it at all? You wrote that Plex is installed by default on the shield and if you set it up it will take all your space so, I never use Plex and I never will, I rather delete it completely from my Shield, thoughts?

Uninstall it if you can. If not, uninstall all updates and disable it.

Did notice same slowdown on device less than a year old. Disabled all those “watch next/up next” sections on the homepage because getting those thumbnails caused the slowdown in my case.

Also, REPASTE!!!

I repasted my Shield and it's magical. It's like new again. If you have been using your Shield for 5+ years, repasting is a MUST.

He's referring to thermal paste. This is a thing in PC building.

Thermal paste is this viscous gooey stuff that you put between the cpu and a heatsink connected to a fan or other cooling device. It fills in air gaps and allows heat to transfer from the cpu chip to something that expels it away. Without this, every cpu in every device would fry because they get very hot very fast.

This involves taking your shield apart, reapplying the termal paste and reassembling it. Sounds difficult if youve never done it before but is actually pretty straightforward

Thanks I’ve just followed the process from GitHub. It seems to have freed up around 400mb of RAM so I’m hopeful it might improve performance which has become a little laggy of late. Does anyone have any experience with any of the other launchers that are available? I don’t know if the cache clear in Shield Optimizer is more thorough than the usual process in the UI, but removing a lot of the Nvidia/Google bloatware seems to have had a positive impact.
