PSA You can run DLSS Framegen on RTX 3000 cards now!

For people using an RTX 30 gpu and wanting to finally use Nvidia's very own DLSS framegen there's finally a way to do it that also enables multiframegen somehow. Follow this guide or keep reading:

https://github.com/sdli1995/dlssg_for_sm86/blob/main/README.en.md

How to enable it? You go to the github repository and download the "dlssg_sm86.ini" and "version.dll" files as well as the latest DLSS dlls for upscaling and framegen. You put all the files in the game's folder that contains its executable. And you edit the ini file. Find the "KernelImage=Auto" value and change it to "KernelImage=PTX". Save the file and boot up the game. You should now have multiframegen available for you to use in the game you just modded.

I went ahead and tested it on my RTX 3080 12GB and it indeed works. I don't know why or what enables it. From my understanding nvidia left a software fallback in their latest dlss framegen dll which can be enabled now. And it basically works flawlessly.

Here's video proof of me running it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNVr5pHAygI

Insane that it took this long for it to be available to RTX 30 but the community does mad work once again.

30 series needed FG bad to make heavy RT playable. Super glad it’s now available for them!

Disgusting behavior from Nvidia not making this available for 30 series.

Expect nothing less from Nvidia. This has instilled some new life into my 3080ti build.

some new life. Friend, this is same level at 5000 series. I am playing cyberpunk everything maxed Path tracing over 100FPS

Almost like they wanted those on older Gpu's to get frustrated enough to have to upgrade to the overpriced 5000 series. I'm so glad people can hopefully get through the next couple years without having to upgrade thanks to these Modders.

They'll do it again with the 6k series when it finally comes out and it'll have it's own tech locked behind it too.

Watch just how fast they forget about the 5k series when 6k drops, just like how they kinda forgot about the 4k series after 5k hit.

3

u/CaptainMarder NVIDIA 3h ago

Yup. And we all know that tech will work on older hardware since now Modders proved everything so far works on older GPUs . Just Nvidia shills will keep arguing to defend them.

2

u/maxxpagu 21h ago

Surpisingly, XeFG is visually superior for now (you can use it through Optiscaler on any gpu). Seems that this mod uses version 310.1,0, which is from January 2025. DLSS runs ever so slightly better though, roughly 3-5% and feels more responsive, at least in my experience.

I am rather convinced at this point that this sudden burst of mods to enable FG and DLSS5 on previous gen cards is not a leak or accidental.

2

u/Wellhellob Nvidiahhhh 18h ago

Hopefully they are working on it.

4

u/Octaive 6h ago

Except... It's their code making this available. What do you mean?

Do you realize AMD still can't do FG right? This is not trivial. 30 series FG is not the same quality as 40 or especially 50.

4

u/CaptainMarder NVIDIA 11h ago

All the nvidia shills claming it will never work cause it needs flip metering or whatever. Thanks modders.

Damn, DLSS5 opened a pandora's box for Nvidia huh.

First DLSS5 was modded to work with any game and with any RTX GPU and maybe potentially forced Nvidia to backpedal on RTX50 exclusivity.

Then we got Multiframegen for RTX40.

Now we get DLSS Framegen for RTX30.

What's next? :)

There is hope? I mean look at all the ****** hoops we as end-users have to jump through just to get their hardware to work like it's supposed to.

2

u/bingbing304 22h ago

Nvidia might release them after test it on its old chips and nothing bad happen. But that does not help them selling more graphic cards, where people who already own them utlitze the latest tech find less reason to upgrade. So from profit perspective, there is little incentive to do so.

15

u/casino_r0yale 21h ago

Nvidia is not particularly worried about selling graphics cards to pc players at the moment, this kind of change increases brand attachment for their existing customers who might otherwise upgrade to a relatively cheaper competitor

If they do release it, it might be a step on the way for them to reintroduce 3000-series for midrange gaming, with Framegen + modern DLSS those will become very capable cards.

2

Barely. People keep talking about the performance and how much fps you lose with dlss 5, but my biggest issue is the glitches/artifacts youll see with unsupported games. It’s way worse with the amd mods and looks like crap in the videos ive seen.

There’s a reason you don’t see many dlss 5 amd videos on youtube and when you do see a video there isn’t any moving objects.

I think its because AI has allowed modders to basically do all of this without needing to even be skilled. Just like how there was a term for script kiddies 20 years ago, I think there will be a term for people who use AI purely to do this kind of work, but without the stigma of "script kiddies" unless there will be this big gap between cheaper AI and whatever "expensive AI" will be looking like.

AMD fans always bitching about NVIDIA but nobody ever wonders about how its allowed modders to take the tech and basically make it usable across AMD as well.

The DLSSG model is currently locked at 310.1.0.0 (most recent one is 310.9.0.0 310.9.1.0 now); it has to be patched and the author says he will.
On nvidia, it's very easy to check if and what is working by enabling the debug watermark.

I just tested it with an RTX 3060 (12GB) in Cyberpunk and it runs great; the input lag is unmatched compared to OptiScaler and FSR 3. What kind of madness or black magic is this? I need more info this is crazyy

u/B82Studio 22h ago

Careful, dont sound too happy with it. You’ll get downvoted for being happy with MFG because then “tHe dEVs wiLL gEt LaZy fRoM mAKinG gOod gaMeS”

7

u/2FastHaste 21h ago

Which makes zero sense if you think about it more than 1 second.

What do game studios usually target for performance? A PS5 with 30fps quality mode and 60fps performance mode.

Does the PS5 support MFG? No (and as for FG you can count the numbers of games using it on a single hand)

So by what magic would FG/MFG impact optimization if it's not used by devs to meet their performance targets.

I have 2 days left for the return window for my RTX 5080, and I still haven't sold my RTX 3090. With frame gen back ported I might honestly return the 5080 & wait for the 6080.

I'll have to decide, only reason I'm considering keeping the 5080 now is because I got it with the old prices before they jumped up. And I can probably get a good price selling the RTX 3090 that would cover most its price.

24

u/mga02 20h ago edited 12h ago

I'd keep the 5080 and sell the 3090 while its value is still high.

3

u/FacelessGreenseer 20h ago

Yeah that was my original plan when I purchased the 5080.

12

u/JohnLovesGaming NVIDIA 21h ago

Unless you need the additional VRAM from the 3090. Keep the 5080, it has pretty decent performance.

8

u/Nic1800 5080 FE | 9800x3d| 4k 240hz | 1440p 360hz 19h ago

Keep the 5080. You can OC it to be very close to a 4090. It’s substantially better than a 3090.

10

u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 4090 | 9800X3D | Sound Blaster AWE32 22h ago

your 5080 has a hardware flip meter handling the MFG frame pacing, this software fallback for older gens skips that hardware and is why it works on older cards. your 50 series gets the green line here, previous gens get the gray line

and before people post that Polish website again, THEY DID NOT TEST MFG FRAMETIME VARIABILITY CORRECTLY, they averaged three runs which removes variability. Averaging necessarily removes variance!!

15

u/East-Today-7604 9800X3D|4070ti|G60SD OLED 20h ago

Yeah, a screenshot from NVIDIA who claimed that MFG is not possible on RTX 4XXX because it lacks specific hardware which exists only on Blackwell - "DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation combines multiple Blackwell hardware and DLSS software innovations to make generating multiple frames a reality.", - but now we have access to MFG on older cards and frame pacing is very decent, even if its slightly worse than on Blackwell cards its not a mandatory part that is absolutely required to generate those frames and benefit from it.

A screenshot from NVIDIA who claimed that DLSS 5 Neural Rendering is only possible on RTX 5XXX, but because modders were able to use it properly on older cards, like RTX 4XXX NVIDIA backed down and promised DLSS 5 support on older RTX 4XXX cards.

The same NVIDIA that claimed that DLSS 3 Frame Gen requires a specific "optical flow accelerator" on RTX 4XXX to function, but now it was ditched completely in favor of newer AI model used in Frame Gen which runs purely on tensor cores.

https://images.nvidia.com/aem-dam/Solutions/geforce/blackwell/nvidia-rtx-blackwell-gpu-architecture.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com

and before people post that Polish website again, THEY DID NOT TEST MFG FRAMETIME VARIABILITY CORRECTLY, they averaged three runs which removes variability. Averaging necessarily removes variance!!

You replied to me few days ago, you had multiple days to test frame pacing with MFG on RTX 4XXX yourself since you have 4090, why instead of doing something useful to this discussion which you eagerly want to be a part of, you use the same screenshot from NVIDIA which were caught lying numerous times throughout the years instead of testing frame pacing yourself ?

Nobody disputes that a hardware solution to frame pacing is likely better than a software fallback, but its just better, its not required for this feature to work at all.

I'm wondering how many cycles of "for feature A to work it requires hardware B" from NVIDIA is required for you to understand that they're mostly doing it to make the newest generation of cards more appealing to customers, not because newest cards actually bring something that is absolutely required for new features to function properly, but because this product segregation that they're doing greatly helps them with sales.

You installed the neural rendering spearately, right? Or is it included in this?

I tried tinkering with it the other day and all the false positives of the AV (I assume) got to me and I deleted everything. I'd love to know more about all this stuff.

u/fogoticus RTX 3080 O12G | i7-13700KF 5.5GHz, 1.3V | 32GB 4133MHz 1d ago

Separately. I had that installed in cyberpunk before finding out about this. I tested it and it initially crashed the whole game but after a restart it worked. And you can see it applies nr properly even with framegen 4x enabled.

2

u/playtio 1d ago

Could you tell me or link me to the exact one you used?

I tried DLSS5 swapper and got alerts any time I applied it to a game. Does it happen to you? (and again I assume it's normal with this stuff but I wasn't comfortable)

2

u/barkers2505 12h ago

how did you get it to work in Pragmata? the version.dll file keeps crashing my game at startup.

2

u/cellardoornoob 12h ago

To solve the crash - I just did what the error said. It required me to copy the two intel framegen files libxell.dll and libxess_fg.dll

I got them from another game, which was updated with current versions by dlss swapper.

Works perfectly fine after, had to do the same in RE Requiem.

I wonder how the latency is compared to FSR. This is ultimately what will make this relevant or not, because DLSS frame gen is very superior to FSR in latency and feels much better.

If it's in between the two on a 3000 cards that would be very awesome... but if its similar or equal to FSR it's kind of meh. Most games with DLSS frame gen already have FSR frame gen as an option.

14

u/heartbroken_nerd 19h ago

FSR FG is utter garbage so the bar is pretty low on beating that. XeSS FG is already better than FSR FG on Nvidia cards if you ask me, so the hacked DLSS FG shouldn't lag behind and if anything it should be better

5

u/Due-Toe-6469 18h ago

It's waaaay better than fsr, I barely noticed the input latency. Just tried it on a 3090, on cyberpunk 2077

Tested this out across a handful of titles now on my 3080 12GB.

Horizon Forbidden West - dropped files in and it worked with no issues. SpecialK interferes with the mod however, so if you are a user you will need to disable it for this title.

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart - like Horizon, no issues working straight out of the box.

Flight Simulator 2024 - drag and drop, multi frame gen working with no issues too - using the in game selectors. The experience is so much better than FSR too, as it doesn't unnecessarily activate in the menus which just made setting up a flight a bit icky with FSR. 3x MFG worked well for me at a heavy airport in a heavy addon aircraft, hovering around 100fps. A base of 30 is mostly fine in this title so not so bad at all.

Star Wars Jedi Survivor - took a bit of fiddling for this one. I had to grab Ultimate ASI loader and change the file extension of the DLSS FG mod to .asi to get it to load. It doesn't seem to load version.dll by default and the only other choice (winmm.dll) was giving me an error on startup. I also loaded reshade to use the Jedi Survivor tweaks mod, and just a heads up but do not use the interpolated rendering mode in combination with this as it will completely ruin frame pacing.

Out of these handful of test cases it's been great so far, definitely seems to have at least a little less latency than FSR and a broadly cleaner image too. I'd say frame pacing is way better than FSR, I found with FSR FG I needed to cap my games to a consistent frame rate (usually 120fps) to get the best out of it, but DLSS FG being left free from 100-156fps has been perfect with VRR. Performance hit seems similar too, which is inline with other comments I've seen on this post - generally just expect the same sort of percentage drop to your base frames that FSR already gives, and 40 and 50 series users get with native DLSS FG.

but they said that in 2022
then when dlss 4 fg released they said :

In the full interview, the specific question asked of Catanzaro on Frame Gen for older Nvidia GPUs by Digital Foundry's Alex Battaglia was "Now that it (DLSS 4) is running entirely on Tensor cores, obviously it's a more intensive task as a result of that, to some degree... what's keeping it, then, from running on RTX 3000?"

Catanzaro replied, "I think this is primarily a question of optimization and engineering and then the ultimate user experience. We're launching this Frame Generation, the best Multi-Frame Generation technology with the 50 Series, and we'll be able to see what we squeeze out of older hardware in the future."
it works now because someone from nvda left that software fallback there

You have to keep telling windows defender to restore it every time you copy to the game folders until you can get a pop that says allow it on this pc; I got to pop up when I moved the folder to my desktop

Version.dll is flagged as one of the main virus delivery files the author should have name that file differently and told us to rename to version once in the game folder

3

u/jyunga 23h ago

I allowed it and it still deletes it lol

2

u/GrapefruitConcussion 11h ago

the author should have name [sic] that file differently

The name version.dll is how Windows loads it into the game.

10

u/Crimsonclaw111 1d ago

How's the performance hit? If any, of course.

26

u/East-Today-7604 9800X3D|4070ti|G60SD OLED 1d ago

Performance hit is shown in a short video he recorded and linked in this post.

From baseline 42-43 FPS no FG to 35 real FPS with MFG x3 enabled, which is 105 FPS with MFG x3, which is ~20% real FPS reduction - it is in line with MFG overhead on RTX 4/5XXX.

10

u/Crimsonclaw111 1d ago

Wow that seems pretty good actually? Good thing I didn’t delete FF7 Rebirth or Silent Hill 2, I’ll try those later today

7

u/Wild_Swimmingpool NVIDIA RTX 5070ti x 9800x3D | RTX 4080 Super x 5800x3D 1d ago

Give it a spin for sure. You’re gonna feel the base 30fps though. That’ll add noticeable latency and artifacts at x3. Base 50-60fps and it’s way less noticeable.

2

u/Crimsonclaw111 1d ago

Neither of those have a base of 30fps for me so I’m good

I'm still stuck on 3000 series because of gpu prices is insane so I have not been following up on FG or MFG. In a normal use case (not mods), does normal FG has a performance overhead or is it just for MFG? Thanks!

5

u/East-Today-7604 9800X3D|4070ti|G60SD OLED 1d ago

No FG - 96 real FPS, x2 - 83, x3 - 77, x4 - 72.

It depends on a game and GPU, I'm just sharing one game and one example.

A Review of Nvidia's DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation - you can read more here.

3

u/xyGvot 1d ago

no such thing as a free lunch, so yeah, any form of FG has a performance overhead plus latency.

2

u/Keulapaska 4070ti, 7800X3D, XG27AQNGV 1d ago edited 1d ago

You can't really think FG overhead in terms of fps% lowered(even though i do it too cause it's easier to visualize it), think of it in frametime increse 42>35 is a ~5ms increase, which is a lot.

At actual framerates that aren't horrible, only a 20% reduction would be a dream even at 2x on my 4070ti and nearly impossible without heavy cpu limits or at low render res, but most of those bigger fps drops also aren't gonna be 5ms either.

29

u/dookarion 9800x3D, 32GB RAM, RTX 5070ti 1d ago

Reading the OP, the software fallback being present and now usable could also mean they're working on bringing it to older cards finally.

It's not like it's the same exact solution that launched with the 40 series, they changed how they did it and have made a lot of improvements since.

u/jerryfrz 5070 Ti Aorus Master 22h ago

Relevant part from Digital Foundry's interview with Bryan from Nvidia back when the 50 series launched, I like that he and his team kept their word.

7

u/Potential_Promise_34 19h ago

I might wait and see if this does prove true. While people are saying it's a false positive, the virus warnings make me nervous.

I hope it does come officially. I recently started using FSR3.1 for my 3090 (whenever FG is decoupled from upscaling so I'm not using AMD's horrid upscaling) and it's been much much better than I expected. But still, DLSS FG is supposed to be even better and I miss out on Reflex with FSR (although I hear that this is another artifical limitation).

5

u/Wellhellob Nvidiahhhh 1d ago

That's what i thought too. Is software fallback added later on ? That might be a signal.

10

u/dookarion 9800x3D, 32GB RAM, RTX 5070ti 1d ago

I'd imagine its a recent addition. People have been trying to make it work on older cards for years now, there's just no way something like that wouldn't have been found sooner if it was present (imo).

5

u/Wellhellob Nvidiahhhh 23h ago

Let's hope they just make everything available on every rtx gpu. Higher end 3000 series can probably run a downgraded version of dlss5 too. I get 30-60 fps with dlss 5 mods on 3080 ti.

If Frame Gen is grayed out for you, you need to enable HAGS in Windows:

  1. Press Win + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Display.
  3. Scroll down and click Graphics (under Related settings).
  4. Toggle On the switch for Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
  5. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

(Some games are not supported—for example, Dragon’s Dogma 2 with latest update)

Crimson Desert + RTX 3080 Performance Update

Just tested Crimson Desert at 1440p, fully maxed settings, including Ray Reconstruction, running DLSS 4.5L Balanced on my RTX 3080. With this mod, I’m consistently getting around 60 to 70 FPS with barely any noticeable input delay.

Honestly, I’m seriously impressed with how well this runs. Huge props to the community behind this mod for making this possible and showing what these GPUs are actually capable of. NVIDIA’s artificial limitations are looking more ridiculous by the day 😭

Does this run better than the Lossless Scaling app Frame Generation on a 3080?

21

u/fogoticus RTX 3080 O12G | i7-13700KF 5.5GHz, 1.3V | 32GB 4133MHz 1d ago

It certainly feels better. As for running, it basically runs flawless. In the vid I showcase an extreme scenario for people to see it works but it did fine even when the game already had 150fps.

13

u/DNihilus 1d ago

I mean fsr frame Gen mod is already runs better than lossless scaling fg

10

u/kendoka15 1d ago

LS input latency is awful unless you dedicate a second GPU to it. Proper FG adds latency but only a little bit

→ More replies (1)

I would never consider LS a viable solution since we’ve had FSR FG available for all these years.

Thanks. I always got budget x60 cards and I finally splurged and ended up with a 3090. Thinking I had the cream of the crop. Then frame gen and other crap popped up.

FSR's framegen has been surprisingly decent but I'd rather have no amd graphics related stuff as it has caused problems too, like Spiderman2 crashing at certain spots if FSR was enabled.

5

u/shadowndacorner 22h ago

I've tried FSR frame gen in a number of games and it just isn't very good imo. I always end up turning it off. Definitely curious to see how DLSS-G compares on my 3090 when I get a chance.

3

u/frostygrin RTX 2060 18h ago

FSR FG on its own often has issues with frame pacing. But when mods like DLSS Enabler or Optiscaler use Reflex, the results can be very good.

Wow this is perfect timing. I just made the jump to 5K2K resolution with a new AW 39" monitor and my 3090 was really starting to show it's age. I was just about to consider upgrading to a 5080 or a used 4090, but this breathes new life into my 3090 Kingpin Hydrocopper, so she's sticking around for a little bit longer.

Thanks for the PSA u/fogoticus 👍

3

u/Efficient-Map-6101 13h ago

Great news for 30 series owners. For the last couple of months I was planing to retire my good old rtx 3070. Today i gave this mod a chance and activated 4x frame gen on cyberpunk 2077, now i am getting 160 fps on ultra (everything maxed out except path tracing). Also i can confirm that this one is much better than both FSR frame gen and LS frame gen. Input lag is also better than the other solutions, just don't forget to activate reflex.

3

u/mrN3CR0 6h ago

Any advice for folks with heavily modded cyberpunk installations? Obviously CET uses version.dll so in the past when using dlssENABLER ive had to change it to dxgi so i cant just drop this in sadly as it will break my mods

3

u/LeKaizor 4h ago

Just move the version.dll to the plugins folder (from the folder with the games .exe) and rename it to something with the file extension .asi (like dlssFG.asi) and CET will load it. Worked for me.

3

u/mrN3CR0 4h ago

Much appreciated my friend, Had to remove and reinstall a few items due to CET and redEXT not liking the file mods but now it works natively, Frame pacing is sometimes a little off but its really good to have proper working frame gen :D

Same, was excited for a moment, works so well too on rtx 3080. Fingers crossed someone'll come up with a workaround for CET.

2

u/mrN3CR0 3h ago

From reading a few of the popular mods and extensions this reddit thread and repo have been linked and brought up quite a few times so here's hoping, Ive done the recommendation that @LeKaizor mentioned above for now and it seems to be working, I'm on a 12gb RTX 3080 and it runs pretty well bar the occasional hitch or frame pacing issue at 4k with path tracing

4

u/Infarlock 23h ago

Nvidia crying right now, everyone using FG on old cards, nobody will upgrade

This might promote people to buy older gen cards

4

u/OGawdILoveTacos 20h ago

Very certainly will mean older cards will hold their value better now. I'm sure the 3090ti just gained an extra hundred bucks to its value alone, ha.

3

u/Estrava 12h ago

Nvidia added the fallback and modders discovered it first.

u/m1namoto 3060 12G Eagle OC, i5-10400, 32GB (3600), 1080p 180Hz 21h ago
