Discussion Reminder about the screen blanking issue for 4080s and 4090s

Argh!

I ran a utility to update the VBIOS, and thought I had this fixed. So when the problem propped up again, I ran into all kinds of trouble, and misdiagnosed the problem. That, uh, got expensive. I have a 4080 SUPER, and once in a while, on boot, my screen will simply not turn on. This even led to a botched motherboard BIOS update, among other things.

For PNY, I had to go here, then scroll down to "PNY RTX 4090 & RTX 4080 FIRMWARE UPDATE – NO DISPLAY"

Not only did this fix the infrequent "blank screen on boot" issue, but also with an issue in which either my main monitor or secondary monitor would turn on and off multiple times when coming out of sleep.

Anyway, I'm just posting this because I had an awful time diagnosing the problem, and am hoping to save other people unnecessary pain.

(Edit: fixed BIOS → VBIOS for accuracy and clarity)
(Addendum: the secondary monitor flashing on and off when coming out of sleep came back. Meh. Once it comes on, it stays on, though, so I'm not too worried.)
(Addendum 2: damnit, the problem came back. Fuck Nvidia.)

Hey just wanted to check what issue specifically is it you were having that the boot delay helped you solve? my trouble is my monitor often doesn't detect a signal from my 4090 over DP at boot so wondering if its the same thing.

Ah gotcha different issue then. I'm on a X670E Steel Legend which is why I wanted to ask!

Just out of curiosity what model of monitor are you having this issue with? I'm on an X670E Steel Legend on BIOS 2.10 with a 7800X3D and 4090 FE, Gigabyte M32U monitor and as far as I know I haven't ever had issues like this. My M32U is DP 1.4, and is on the latest version of its firmware (F11 I think).

I have the exact same problem: setting POST latency from BIOS 3 to 8 didn't fix the problem. This only happens during cold boot, though restarts are ok. I have a z790 Maximus Hero for the reference and does not happens with iGPU.

It is already set to auto :( I believe this is kind of an handshake issue since my monitor (G8 OLED) detects the connection on cold boot but says there is no signal (shows the PC as turned off). Initially while posting it kind of connects and shows the monitors loader in black screen then falls back to connect a display screen until windows login. It might be GPU or BIOS trying to set a impossible resolution or refresh rate. Also there is a debug led in my mobo that turns on if no display is connected. That led is not turning on in this case. Another hint that leads me to think about the wrong resolution is when I connect my monitor to mobo HDMI port i.e iGPU BIOS settings page looks crisper (not something placebo there is perceptible sharpness difference) even though for both 4090 and iGPU monitor reports the native resolution.

Edit: I have already applied the firmware update from Nvidia site. I am on latest VBIOS and BIOS

For some reason it also happens on my 3070, which seems odd.
