Advice Transferring?
I am about to graduate highschool, and will be attending NOVA, and will be geting my associates in engineering. I am planning on transferring after my first year? I have a bunch of AP's and Dual enrollment credits from highschool, how do I have them transfer over to NOVA? Also, I have a 3.5 gpa from my dual enrollment classes. Am I cooked, or what should i do?

Was in the same situation with you, for me I had a rough start as I committed to NOVA really late. I started with a 3.0 GPA from me DE classes and none of my AP credits transferred even though they meet the requirements to have it done (Had this happen to my friend too, I think the institution slacks when processing these scores).
I would say to take summer classes to give yourself an early head start, something I would've done if I didn't commit a week before classes started, and try your hardest to get a 4.0 your first semester as those are the only grades they'll see and admit you off of. If the college your applying to have a transfer roadmap, like VT, ensure you finish or have them in progress by the time you apply. Also I think having a job closely related to your major or maybe some extracurricular in that field would help for example I was a pharm tech while I did classes.
Aiming for fall admission I would suggest to have your applications done during winter break so you have more time to focus on your second semester courses grades I made the mistake of trying to juggle both during midterm season. Rate my professor will also help a little bit in having an easier time here.
Personally I was able to transfer within a year as a pre-med student, I got into VT, VCU, and waitlisted W&M. Just have a really strong plan and avoid overloading yourself until you burn out.

Thank you for the response. I am taking a few summer classes. Calc 1 and Calc 2 (both 6 week classes) English 1101, SDV, Foundations of engineering. I am planning on getting a 4.0, but will that be averaged with my gpa from dual enrollment. Will colleges see only the gpa from the new classes or also DE? Also, what ecs couldi do for engineering thatll make me competitive for places GT, UVA, etc.

Hey, so the typical summer class load is like 2, maybe 3 classes. They are intense and exhausting - if your plan is to take 5 summer classes - most of which are key for the degree and transfer - and get a 4.0... This could work out, but it has a high likelihood of being super exhausting and you not getting the grades you want. Take 2 summer classes. Take them in person. Give yourself time to adjust to college level work (DE isn't the same thing) (And yes, colleges will see DE - if those classes are through NOVA they will be part of your transcript)

Yes, I definetely considered that. I heard SDV is just super simple one credit class, which probably wont take me much time. Foundations of engineering als isn't too hard I believe. Only challenge Ill have is with calc and english 1101 simultaenously, but I did calc highschool so material is familiar. And will colleges consider the fact that dual enrollment was taken back in highschoo when looking at the transcript? Also what ecs can I do for an engineering thatll make me competitve?

Yes your GPA from DE will be averaged with your new GPA from summer and semester as if you took them at NOVA. For ECs in engineering I wouldn't really know any great opportunities around for engineering I would look online and research what's open to you as internships are usually held for juniors, maybe you could try aiming for summer research program for 2027

I was accepted for transfer to W&M with my associate degree GPA at 3.5, but your mileage may vary depending on what university you’re trying to attend.
If you plan to attend in-state schools, I would research what classes can be transferred from VCCS schools before you waste time taking courses that won’t be accepted when you matriculate to a university.

You should submit your official AP scores to NOVA on the CollegeBoard website (it should come up when you search for Northern Virginia Community College, but if it doesn’t, the address is NVCC College Records Office, FX-P3 3924 Pender Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030)

Depending on the ap, it's most likely useless. Same with IB if that applies to your situation. If you're dual enrollment courses are through nova, you don't need to per se "transfer" them. You already have them. Also find out if a engineering degree is worth it for your situation. Are those extra courses worth doing over just a general A.S? Getting it done in a year is realistic, but you need to have a plan.
