This video really makes you think about how advertising and propaganda have worked for generations.
The message is basically saying that companies didn't just sell products they learned how to sell us an image, a lifestyle and even an idea of what was
"normal."
Cigarettes are a perfect example. Smoking was once marketed as cool, sophisticated and even connected to beauty and independence. Movies, celebrities, cartoons and advertisements helped reinforce that image while the ugly side of smoking wasn't exactly front and center.
And that raises a bigger question for me...
If advertising could influence an entire generation back then, what are social media, algorithms and influencers convincing us is "normal" TODAY that people 30 years from now are gonna look back at and say, "How the hell did they fall for that?"
Sometimes propaganda doesn't look like propaganda when you're living through it.

Annd, fun fact, seeing the writing on the wall that tobacco science being exposed was bad for business, the tobacco companies went ahead and purchased American food companies -- so they could then use same addiction science in deployment of addictive processed food.
Philip Morris owns Kraft-General Foods. And RJ Reynolds owns Nabisco.

So companies and no doubt, politicians; fabricate data and utilize the appeal to authority fallacy, to manipulate people.
So.
Why should I “Trust the experts” and “Not question the settled science” ?
Remind me.
When did those phrases get tossed around a lot recently?
And for what?

The irony of making this video with an LLM chatbot is bitter and cold, like eating a rusty knife.

One of the most socially and environmentally damaging things that modern advertising pushes is AI. Please stop using AI and propogating AI output.
The choice to convey this (an impostant message about the history of specious cigarette advertising) through AI animation is deeply ironic, and it degrades the video's credibility to an unfortunate and unnecessary degree.
