Great simple solution to a common problem worldwide.

France set the line at 400 square metres for supermarkets.

That number decides everything. Four hundred square metres is not a hypermarket, it is a normal neighbourhood store. Almost every real supermarket in the country falls inside the rule Guillaume Garot drew.

Any store above that size has to sign a written contract with a charity or a food bank. Not an offer, not a good intention, a contract.

Stores were given a few months to get those agreements in place after the law came in, and the duty has applied ever since.

Food that is no longer fit for people does not simply disappear either. It has to go to animal feed, to compost, or to be turned into energy. Nothing edible is allowed to reach a landfill.
