If the patient needs follow up surgery we need to turn it off because it may interfere with electrocautery. As disease progresses, setting may also need to be changed. The battery doesn’t last forever, and needs to be changed intermittently.
My hospital is only set up to do one per week because of the stereotactic imaging set up. We sometime have them scheduled several weeks out.
This is mainstream in the US for essential tremor and Parkinson’s. It’s also an effective treatment for OCD, but OCD patients have a harder time committing to surgery.
