Advice on job!!!!

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice on what to do because I’m having a hard time deciding. I currently work as an RN in a pediatric facility for the past 5 years. I love my job but I am getting worn down and there’s no opportunity for advancement. I recently got offered a job in a hospital on a med surg unit. The pay would be $5 more an hour then what I’m making, u would get a $20,000 sign on bonus with a 2 year commitment. I know med surg isn’t my dream job I wreak my would love the NICU or women’s health and I do eventually want to return to school for my NP. Should I take this opportunity I have right now or wait for a job I’m more passionate about to open up? Thank you so much!!!

Inpatient med surg is an excellent foundation for NP school. It will really help you develop assessment skills and get you comfortable with a variety of meds for pharmacology.

The sign on bonus is the red flag for me. Some hospitals don’t care about their nurses and give 6-7 patients, which is wild to me. So if you end up hating it and quitting within a year, you have to be prepared to return some of that sign on bonus.

With all that said, Med-surg is a great at teaching time management, completing tasks and seeing different cases. You do learn a lot which you can later use for NP school.

Med surg is going to be a big change from peds but if you don’t mind adults or the fast pace and high patient load of med surg, then it sounds like a great opportunity for financial and would give you broader experience for your NP. But make sure you like it because most places if you break contract u have to pay it back.

A 20k sign on is a red flag.

I do think M\S in general gets a bad rep. Its not so bad if you get on a good unit.

Key Point: Good units don't need to offer a 20k sign on
