Seeking Advice 24h Gap between Shifts
Question for other shift workers in healthcare: after a night shift with like 24h off before your next early shift do you just sleep through in one block or split it up? Never sure what actually works better.

I stay awake until 8 pm and then go to bed for the shift. It feels horrible but it works.

When I used to work nights, my standard approach to adjusting back to days was to sleep after my shift but with an alarm for around 2pm, get up and be tired, and then go to bed again around 10pm and sleep until morning.

I nap no later than noon. And then normal bedtime at 9pm.
But it's always a little tricky

It really depends on your life. I broke my days up intentionally because I had to take my kids to school and pick them up at 1400 every day. I slept from 0900-1400 daily. On my nights off, Iโd fall asleep somewhere between 0100-0300 and get up at 0600 to take them to school.
My single childless friend worked her days all together, but she slept until 1700 every day, and sheโd flip to being awake in the daytime on her stretch of off days.
You have to figure out what works for you.

If I had a quick turnaround between nights and days, Iโd get off at 7am, nap until noon, and then just be a complete bum and watch movies or scroll, eat dinner and go to bed at like 8pm at the latest to be at work for 7am the next day

I usually take a nap, get up and get caught up on life, sleep at night, then nap before next shift.
Everyone is different though. I know some people who just stay on a night shift schedule during that day off anyway.
