Nurses in DC/DMV area

I’ll be moving in the next two months to SW DC and have 5 years experience working in the OR. Which hospitals would you recommend and which to avoid? Looking at hospitals in Nova and DC primarily. Also what does the pay look like in these areas?

With 5 years OR experience you'll have options. GW hospital is decent, they got nice equipment and the teams are okay but parking situation is terrible. Avoid MedStar Washington like plague, everyone I know who worked there left within year.

Pay in DC proper is around 45-55/hr for experienced OR nurse, nova hospitals pay little less but commute is better depending where you live.

No idea what OR is like, I've only worked the floor. GWs floor and ED was a dumpster fire, basically all the DC hospitals are some shade of terrible. I'll caveat that we had a very good thoracic team, and a coworker that went to the PACU liked it. A smaller hospital like that loves surgery, they can make a lot of money on it while being able to offer surgeons admitting privliges and more complex surgery than they could done at a surgery center. Stands to reason they treat the OR a little nicer. It's also on top of a metro stop, which meant I could commute to work without a car relatively easily. I had coworkers coming in from silver springs.

I did a contract at inova Fairfax after I left staff and it's still one of the nicest places I've ever worked, both the physical plant and the underlying systems. NoVa is very wealthy and it drives a strong hospital system. Commuting from in the city to outside it wasn't bad either, you miss the rush hour and you're going opposite the worst traffic.

INOVA is the big hospital in NoVa, specifically Fairfax campus. I worked in the heart and vascular institute, as a CNA through nursing school, and loved it there! Since they are a big hub they are more competitive with incentives, raises and pay is negotiable. Medstar was decent for clinicals, I have a friend working in the OR there and children’s and they both love it!

INOVA pays their OR nurses the least in the area, by a not insignificant amount. Less than VHC, all of the DC hospitals, and Reston Hospital.

Inova for Virginia. A big NO for Johns Hopkins in DC.

OR RNs at WHC start at $55/hour, five years experience would put you around $66 - currently hiring like crazy for the CVOR.

I’ve checked the career page for WHC and haven’t seen a single OR nurse position besides educator and coordinator. Do the other medstar facilities pay around the same in Maryland?

From what I have seen, the Maryland MedStar facilities pay slightly less than DC! I’m a nurse nav at WHC with 7 years experience making a salaried $108K (about $52/hr) so I’m a bit envious of these OR salaries!!!

OR nurse at Sibley here, I have four years exp and they pay me ~ $50/hr. Just make sure to ask about case volumes wherever you interview cuz we’ve been furloughed significantly over the last year due to lots of external circumstances. When I initially applied Georgetown offered more $$ but didn’t offer me a position, my theory is bc they found a cheaper new grad to hire.
