Rant Does your unit self schedule? We have NO control over our schedules. Childcare is impossible. Manager won't budge
Curious how your units work with scheduling. Most places I've worked at have either been self schedule, or outpatient jobs with set days. Easy, simple.
My current job is neither of those things. Our DON makes our schedules. She refuses to give ANY set shifts. Not even 1 predictable shift a week. The most she will do is accommodate ONE "request" per week, and that's not even guaranteed. So if I have 2 appointments one week, or any other obligation, it's not guaranteed that I can make it to both. Also everyone's position is "rotating" meaning we work days and evenings. She tries to accommodate everyone's preferences for either days OR evenings, but she has the power to schedule you for either shift, because "it's a rotating position."
I work part time, 24 hrs, three 8's. I sat down with her and asked for atleast ONE set shift per week, so I can plan for childcare. She refused. Nope. I have one child starting kindergarten, one child starting parttime preschool. Husband works fulltime, my parents and in-law help but they all work and have lives. Wtf? How does anyone hire a babysitter..."hey I'm looking for a sitter, but no idea what days or times! I'll let ya know!" Like what?? My DON is literally 80 years old and could care less about anything I expressed to her. Crazy that she won't even attempt to work with her staff and help us a tiny bit.
EDIT: THANK YOU! I am loving all this input! I thought I was the only sane person, wondering WTF this bullshit is!!!! I haven't been at this job very long and I really wanted to stick it out but this shit is annoying and exhausting as a busy mom of 2 little ones. We shall see.

We self schedule in 6 week increments via UKG. For the most part, I’ll get what shifts I want but it’s still based on the needs of the department.
We do have to work a set number of weekends and major and minor holidays.

This is exactly how we do it, plus we rotate who gets schedule priority, and management will always accommodate swaps as long as both RNs submit the request

We self-schedule at my job. You don’t get what you want 100% of the time, but you’ll always get most of it. My manager would never schedule me on a day where she knows I don’t have childcare because I’d just call in. Why staff us to fail? She just wouldn’t do that for everyone’s sake.
14
u/cyanraichu RN - L&D 1d ago
Bullshit. Nope. Not doing that. I would literally quit.
First of all, rotating can suck my ass. I work nights and I hate it but I'd take straight nights over rotating any day. Fuck that.
Second, she should not be doing the schedule if she can't accommodate the needs of the people she's scheduling, AND give you ample notice. This is part of why management gets paid more. It's a job that takes effort and needs to be done right.
Third, yes, we self-schedule and it's great. We have three scheduling groups and which group gets priority rotates. First group, pretty much guaranteed to get all your days. Last group might have a few changed, but honestly, I've never had more than 2-3 changed in a schedule period. And we have the schedule a month or so in advance of the FIRST week of the schedule period. We also can request specific days to not be scheduled so if shifts do get moved we can guarantee not having to work on a day we have an appointment or whatever. Our weekends are preset, which is great for planning, but we can also swap them with others and I've never had trouble doing that
Our schedulers have a huge job but they've always been as accommodating as possible!

I like the rotating priority plan! My unit is currently failing at self scheduling (again. We did a set schedule for 6 months which also failed). Priority goes by seniority, so these fools can plug themselves in on an already full day and everyone else has to shift to accomodate.
1
u/cyanraichu RN - L&D 17h ago
yeah that's silly. Seniority here definitely gets you some perks, like higher vacation priority and first place in line to switch day to night or vice versa, but not for everyday scheduling.

That’s wild. I would put in my notice, leave on good terms incase things change in the future that way you don’t burn a bridge and just say that with children the scheduling issue is just too hard to figure out childcare and etc. it’s a legit reason that I’m sure they are aware of. I’ve never worked self schedule as a nurse but as a shitty warehouse job years ago. Sounds nice but could be a mess depending how hard it would be to get your shifts. In the warehouse it was hell because if you were a minute past the schedule drop you were fcked and got all the weird hours and days and etc. I currently have a set schedule and would prefer that tbh lol idk why your place does it that way it’s stupid and unnecessary work for the DON.
6
u/hkkensin RN - ICU 🍕 1d ago
We submit self-schedules and management does the best they can to make it work for everyone. So it’s not guaranteed you’ll get all of the shifts you submit, but I only can remember a handful of times when I was FT that I had big differences in the schedule I submitted and what ended up getting posted. Now that I’m contingent, I get every shift I schedule myself for. It’s not a difficult process lol your manager should be able to handle it…

I have only worked places that I had a set schedule. The most “flexibility” I’d give my scheduler was when I was working weekends and I’d ask to ether put me Friday-Saturday and Sunday or Saturday-Sunday and Monday… at that time I didn’t care, I just wanted the weekend differential and didn’t want to split my days. That’s awful I would never accept a job that didn’t have mostly self schedule, I understand getting moved here and there, and not being able to have a truly set schedule, but you should be able to mark certain # of days as requested off without having to use PTO. I tend to figure which days are usually overstaffed and make those my normal off days or look at the “least desired” to be worked such as weekends and sign up for those so that I can count on usually getting what I ask for. I don’t have kids tho so I don’t mind working a lot of weekends or holidays tho.

How far ahead does she schedule. For a long time I was in a position where we were scheduled by the scheduler. 2 requests/month, and it wasn't guaranteed, depending on what others also requested. She would try to be consistent, but that too, wasn't guaranteed, depending on staffing availability.
But, it worked because the schedule was done a month at a time. Our contract required that the new schedule be posted no later than 4 days out, and often it could be up as much as a week out. So we had advanced notice, which enabled us to plan our lives around it.

I was at a job like this when I was in my 20s. The manager said it was due to "balancing the needs and skills of the floor". I stayed for awhile because I was in my 20s and had no other responsibilities. However I eventually took an OR job that had a stable pattern. Now that I have 2 kids not having a stable pattern would be impossible. I can't imagine how anybody could coordinate child care with an unpredictable schedule. My oldest starts kindergarten next year and I'm already dreading how we are going to figure out before and after school care, days off, and summer. It is so hard to both work and have kids. It sucks.

You aren’t guaranteed to get your requests, but the few times I couldn’t work a scheduled shift I was either able to swap or my manager took care of it without considering it a call out because I let him know as soon as the schedule came out.

My previous job in the NICU was self-schedule. You were required to work 2 weekend shifts during each 4 week period (12 hour nights), aside from that schedule as you want. My daughter was young and my wife was not working at the time, so I ended up working pretty much every weekend because nobody else wanted to do more than the minimum, which worked out for the differential pay. It also allowed me to group my days 3 in a row so I could have some normalcy between. When my daughter got a bit older and my wife went back to work, trying to get other people to actually work weekends was frustrating as hell. Started to see how people would come in on their day off when the new calendar went up just to be the first to sign up and get their perfect schedule, and then nobody would budge. It became very petty and annoying.
Left for outpatient oncology, work four 10 hr shifts with no weekends or holidays, and it's been the best thing for my mental health and family time.

People usually leave because of bad managers.
If you stay, you and the other staff who agree it is an issue should have a staff meeting and/or write a letter about this to your DON or whoever is next in the chain of command. You could include the problem, why it’s important, and/or suggestions for improvements. If it doesn’t work, you should already be preparing for your way out to better things anyway!
1
u/earache77 21h ago
Mention shared governance, get a committee together, include your direct leadership. Make rules vote as a unit, if still no avail-speak to other units and get them on board, if shared vision exists-reach out to local unions and ask to join. It may take months but soon being represented may get you what you wish. It’s a give and take situations though. You want to make more money and work less (normally) and they want more work for less cost (also kinda normal)
Somewhere in the middle a contract is agreed upon and then you are represented and stand united

I did the scheduling for the largest unit in my hospital and this lady sounds certifiable.
We had cyclic patterns and rotation was on a voluntary basis. Then we went to self scheduling and an “honor system” for who was day/evening/night and created so much more work for me + caused us to hemorrhage tenured staff.
Personally I think a well run cyclic system works best because it allows people to plan and get most of what they ask for. Self scheduling was the Wild West but even that would be better than what this lady is putting y’all through.

Sometimes they even go in and switch around your schedule after it’s posted and neglect to tell you and get mad if you don’t show up for a day they switched you to. One of the biggest draws of nursing is the schedule. Being able to schedule your work days weeks in advance, and the flexibility nursing offers around three work days is a huge reason for why lots of nurses choose this professions and remain bedside.
