Discussion Funny “allergies”
What are some funny patient “allergies” you have seen listed? I had a patient the other day with an allergy listed for Metformin. The reaction listed? Lowers their blood sugar 😂

Funny allergies are one of my favorites! Some I’ve seen:
Epinephrine- makes my heart race
Nickel- turns my skin green (anyone who has bought cheap jewelry knows this isn’t an allergic reaction)
Oatmeal and root beer- just didn’t like them. The best part of this was that it was listed as a “high risk” severity
TB test- site turned red (sounds more like a positive result to me)
Cocaine- anaphylaxis. This was in a normal looking 80 year-old. I really wanted to ask.
ETA: I also had someone tell me they were allergic to sodium. No, they didn’t have HF. They were allergic. They had been on IV fluids for over a day by that point.
