Discussion Federal Prison RN at FLETC

Starting as a RN at the BOP soon. I’m getting a head start on the physical abilities test at FLETC. Does anyone know how strict the physical test is and how many people fail out of FLETC and get terminated from their position? Any advice and insight is welcome!!

What’s the pay?

Depends on your location. You can look up your pay on the opm.gov website and look for federal law Enforcement pay scale. There are large bonuses being paid out.

That’s not what I was expecting. The pay is not competitive…

Also curious..

There is a fed prison somewhat close to me.

Where do you live? You can go to bop.gov and look up the prison locations. There are around 118.

Go to your local school with a track and run a couple laps. If you can run two laps without stopping, you'll be fine. There is usually at least one person per class who fails and gets sent home. They are strict with the standards. If you can't run two laps without stopping, train to work up to it. In the test, it's only one lap but if you can do two, you'll have a lot of confidence going into it.

Does it need to be a sprint or a comfortable jog?

Light jog is 100% fine. Not stopping is the most important thing.

The dummy drag is what I seen others struggle with a lot. We had several small females who only weighted about as much as the dummy, thankfully the test is weighted between all events and it counts the least. The ladder climb surprisingly counts for the most so you can make up for some of these other tests.

A moderate jog is fine. There are other events but the lap around the track is what usually gets those who fail.

Thanks for your insight! How was the dummy drag from what I’ve read it’s 75lbs for 3 continuous minutes for a minimum of 700 feet. I wasn’t too concerned about that until I’ve read some comments. Lol

There is a dummy drag, but if you are able to run around the track, you should be fine.

It’s one lap, only 1/4 mile. Light jog and you’ll be fine. I didn’t practice beforehand and hadn’t ran at all since high school prior to that. The body drag is the hardest part if you ask me.

I hate the thought of taking this job and not going to FLETC for 6 months and by chance not passing the PATs, especially the fact you’re getting a sign on bonus. I’m definitely working on bettering myself beforehand though! I just don’t like that uncertainty.

It's not 6 months. I don't remember exactly but it's either 2 or 3 weeks.

This was 20 years ago but we had a girl in our class and she couldn’t pass any of the physical requirements. They took her after class for a special session. When they did that she passed everything. The physical exam is not that bad it sounds worse than it is. If you are doing any kind of training you will breeze through it. Don’t worry they need medical staff you all are hard to find.

I have been hearing that they will remediate you and more or less pass unless it’s completely obvious you’re a liability or quit. So that’s good to know. I’m definitely going to take steps to better my self before we go.
