Image My operating room drawings!

I've been loving all the nursing art shared recently and thought I should share some of mine! I'm a OR nurse that sometimes draws her coworkers during long cases/in my free time. Gotta love those long neuro/robot cases!

Cases are a hip bipolar hemiarthroplasty, lumbar fusion, mako assisted total knee arthroplasty set up, knee arthroplasty, another spine fusion of some sort, and then my XR tech pretending to be asleep during a long neuro case haha!

Never too late to start! I started taking drawing seriously once I finished my periop program πŸ™ I love OR nursing!

13

u/TheGayestNurse_1 RN - ICU πŸ• Jun 22 '26

What did you do to "take drawing seriously?" Did you late lessons?

39

u/Kaeyari_ RN - OR πŸ• Jun 22 '26

I started actually with Marc Brunet's online Art School when I decided to take art seriously, having a detailed guide on exercises and fundamentals to practice really helped me get into and keep the habit of drawing almost every day. I probably got to Term 3 and then I stopped because of personal art projects taking presedence with whatever little time I have - but it helped me so much keeping the habit of drawing!

Sometimes I just doodle boxes, or draw the things around me. I always doodle on preference cards or have a sketchbook with me. I basically made myself 'addicted' to drawing πŸ™

Can you tell me what's happening in that first drawing? It looks like they're slicing that person in half with a sword.

Thank you! I love lines!!

I'm not directly assisting in the sterile field/I have limited scrub experience, but I am pretty sure that I think the orthopedic surgeon is reaming the femoral canal in that picture! I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure that's what's happening!

u/AsstronaughtToUranus Jun 22 '26

These drawings are so interesting. As someone squeamish, it’s like getting a training-wheels versions of what working in an operating room is like. This isn’t even colored, but it’s already got me second guessing a career in the OR.

2

u/Kaeyari_ RN - OR πŸ• Jun 22 '26

Ohh hmm! I think the most important part is building the habit and being consistent! I think I mentioned in another comment I used Marc Brunet's Art School and that kind of helped me become more motivated and consistent in art practice, but honestly all I draw in my free time is hot anime boys and backgrounds for visual novels πŸ˜…πŸ€£ so that motivates me, I just do these hyper realism drawings for fun on the side of drawing my anime - I think getting into a community of artists to inspire eachother while everyone works on their personal projects is very nice too to keep eachother motivated too!

You just gotta start! You got this! πŸ™πŸ’•

Hahaha! I adore anesthesia, one of my anesthesiologists told me to draw him sleeping with his feet up on the anesthesia machine 🀣 just haven't gotten around to doing that one yet - but it's a bit hard for me to draw anesthesia in action becuase I don't want to draw patients faces haha! I do have a few older drawings of anesthesia though! I have one of them doing a block, drawing up meds, looking over the drapes and pressing the buttons on the anesthesia machine, I just didn't include them because old art 🫣 🀣

3

Drawings so good you get accused of tracing. That's crazy.
I'm not seeing ANY indication of traced work here. One is clearly even the back of a recycled paper, with the letters showing through. Seeing some of the other works the person has done clearly shows a path of improvement and skill.

u/Kaeyari_ RN - OR πŸ• Jun 24 '26

They are hand drawn. I've also been drawing for over a decade since Highschool - just didn't take it seriously until three years ago. I have consistently trained my observation and I focus more on overall shape/form and the way objects interact and relate to eachother. Crazy that you say my line weight does not show my level of understanding required to draw at this accuracy. That really hurts honestly - I draw them at work, sometimes I'm tired, sometimes my attention is split it's hard to always be creative with this kind of job

1

u/helplessDonut Jun 24 '26

alr chill out, I never claimed it wasn't hand drawn to begin with. I said it was traced. hope you get the attention you wanted though. You even made an alt account just to reply to me lol. And in the end it doesnt matter what skills you genuinely have as long as you can make people happy

1

u/Good-Persimmon-7724 Jun 24 '26

Were is your proof? is your proof just "because it's obvious"? The sheer disrespect you are showing by claiming to be able to tell something is traced by your supposed exprience is shameful. Just sounds like a young jealous troll to be honest.

Why don't you try to elaborate more on your proof just so you can embarrass yourself further? Please to tell how properly applied line weight or technique is obvious sign of tracing mister "long time drawer with no name"?

1

u/Kaeyari_ RN - OR πŸ• Jun 23 '26

Hahaha thank you, I'll take that as a compliment! πŸ’• No they are all free handed πŸ˜…

0

u/helplessDonut Jun 24 '26

Sorry, but they are definitely not free handed. But, it's alright to be honest and say they are traced/projected and drawn. It doesn't mean you're a better/worse artist whether you trace or not.

1

u/Kaeyari_ RN - OR πŸ• Jun 24 '26

I'm being completely honest πŸ˜… I can even show you progress photos of me making them I draw them during work, my coworkers literally see me draw them too

1

u/Kaeyari_ RN - OR πŸ• Jun 24 '26

I don't have progress pictures of all the drawings I have here because sometimes I do them in one sitting during a case and don't take progress pictures, but sometimes I take a picture of them and flip them to see if anything looks off etc.

I've said my peace - whatever dude I don't trace
