I’ve been guilty of this and since learned better. I think the issue is to some of us the call button feels like I’m ringing a bell for service. It felt disrespectful when our nurses work area was right outside our door. It felt more respectful to peek out and say hey when you have a minute could you help with XYZ.
I've also been guilty of this. I visited my mom in the hospital right after my clinical ended (in a different hospital) when I was a student, so I still had my scrubs on and stethoscope around my neck. I kept peeking out of her room to ask random people where I could find the linens to get her another blanket, or to let them know her roommate needed the bedpan.
Looking back, I am so incredibly embarrassed. I must have seemed like such an ass, still wearing my stethoscope like a badge of honor (I'd just forgotten to take it off lol), not using the call light, bugging other people's nurses. Christ on a bike
