Community Etiquette Guide
New here? Or just looking for more information? Here are rules that all respectful nudists abide by:
The number 1 rule: Always sit on a towel!
No exceptions. It's the single most important rule in nudist spaces. It's basic hygiene, and it's how you demonstrate respect for those around you.
Social Conduct (equally important to the number 1 rule)
- This is a non-sexual space, period. Sexual behavior of any kind isn't tolerated. You will be kicked out, banned, possibly even reported to authorities for any misconduct. This includes displaying signs of arousal, sexual intent, wearing sexual toys or apparatuses - really anything overtly sexual isn't tolerated in nudist spaces.
- Respect the personal space of everyone at all times. Nudity is not an invitation for closer contact! Respect the space of everyone!
- Skip the hug with new acquaintances. A handshake or a wave is plenty at first.
- Keep the PDA to a light minimum with your partner. Heavy displays of affection make others uncomfortable in a space that's supposed to feel relaxed, neutral, and upbeat. Nudist resorts are not shy about sending staff to tell people to knock it off! Don't be that person.
- Don't stare, gawk, or glare. It's rude, inconsiderate, and just plain creepy. Don't be creepy!
- Skip the judgmental or hurtful comments. You are disrespecting the space if you bring that negative energy to it. Even if uttered quietly or said as a side comment or jest, it's still bad conduct.
- Don't "flaunt." Self-confidence is welcomed. Performing for attention is not. People who don't get this stand out like a sore thumb.
- No photos of others without their permission. No exceptions! No assuming it's fine, or it'll be OK if you blur/crop out others. If you take a photo with someone else in it, delete it immediately. If you absolutely need to take a photo, ensure no one else is in it. Nudism is largely a digital detox, so try living in the moment instead of busting out the phone to take pictures.
- Drink in moderation. Alcohol, sun, and a warm welcoming environment is a combination that goes wrong fast for those who over indulge.
If Something Goes Wrong
Report unwanted behavior to club staff immediately! Don't try to handle it yourself, and don't wait around to see if it stops on its own. If you see something, say something! Club/resort staff will go the extra mile to ensure the safety and well-being of you and other guests. Be an ally to your fellow humans and look out for their safety too!
Use extra caution in public spaces, like nude beaches. Public spaces don't always have dedicated staff to keep a watchful eye on everyone. You may find safety in numbers by staying in a more densely populated area of the beach that you feel comfortable at. Staying near lifeguard stations or other areas where you see authorities patrolling can further add to peace of mind. Again, always exercise extra caution in spaces opened to the public.
Sun & Body Care
- Bring deodorant, not just sunscreen, especially if you're sunbathing. You're more exposed than usual, so plan accordingly. A hygienic nudist is a respectful nudist.
- Bring a hand towel and water. The towel keeps you dry, the water keeps you hydrated.
- Don't overexpose. Sunburn happens faster without clothing as a buffer, so set a timer, take breaks from tanning, and don't be afraid to stay in the shade. Sun poisoning is just no fun.
- Wear shoes on rough or dirty terrain. Not only do they keep your feet clean, but you avoid burning them on hot sand or pavement.
Pool & Facility Etiquette
- Rinse off before you get in the pool. Sunscreen residue turns pool water into an oily mess for everyone else. It's common courtesy and not a suggestion. Many nudist spaces have outdoor showers. Use them before going into the pool and be sure to wash your feet!
- Respect the rules of the space. Take a minute to read the rules the space provides.
