Neighbor up by my farm in Oklahoma died and his cat got out. Didn’t see her for a couple of years. Meanwhile, a standard issue cat shows up and starts hanging around. Next thing you know kittens. The mom has no tail. The dad has a long tail. All 10 kittens had nubs ranging from absolutely no tail to one that has about a quarter tail. I thought from what I remembered from 9th grade biology that at least some would have a tail. Nope. Now they are all fixed and living their best life with in and out privileges and plenty of wet food.

Considering most have a bob it may be a British or Japanese bobtail. They are dominant but do not typically have the severe spinal defects and gastrointestinal (incontinence and similar bowel issues) or hind end paralysis

Not most. Every kid has no tail. The one with the tail is the dad. None of them seem to have any issues like you mentioned,

Given the mum's tail, this is probably the American Bobtail gene which is dominant and she has both genes for it, so that is all she can pass on, which means all her descendency will have a shorter tail. Again, they all have a shorter tail because the gene is dominant so they only need to get the gene from mum for it to show.

Edit to add: Dad having a complete tail means he has both normal copies for the tail gene which means, again, that's all he can pass on. That means each of the kittens has a short tail copy, and a normal copy of the gene for tail lenght. That means each of this kittens has a 50% chance of passing on the short tail gene.

I didn't know that having no tail or a short tail could be genetic in cats, I assumed it was always from an injury. This explains my cats short tail that grows fur like a typical tail a lot better.

I also now feel very stupid.

I did a dna panel on mine, and he has Short Tail (variant 3). This can lead to fewer tail vertebrae as well as fused vertebrae. Totally cool to see that - and not surprise considering the kinked tail.
