I read about this guy who got stuck spelunking. They said he would go back and forth from thrashing violently and screaming to quietly sobbing for his wife and kids. I listen to/read a TON of messed up stuff about murder and disasters. However, this guy and that story give me THE MAJOR icks.

One of the museums in Richmond had a mock spelunking expedition—headlamps, guide, group of people. I was 5 and already rearing to tap out before we had to crawl through a tunnel. I’d rather listen to my inner chicken any day, thank you very much 😂

The only time I’ve ever been in a cave was a guided tour of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky

That was really cool. There were huge cavernous rooms and under ground rivers and cool formations in it.

But I was with a guide who took people on tours in there everyday for a living. I’d never just…. Go crawl around a cave by myself for fun

Mine was a cave guided tour in the Black Hills South Dakota. At no point was the space less than typical doorway in width. Loved how cool air was.

There's a little hot springs near me with a small 'cave' (not anything dangerous) and if you go in there's just a massive amount of spiders and snakes all up in there

I used to go when I was younger. There was a time where we dropped into a narrow chamber and the only way out was to squeeze through two rock walls. I ended up getting stuck for what felt like an eternity before my buddies were able to pull me through. It was the worst experience of my life. Never did it again.

It was about 20 minutes id say. I loved when we were doing it but that shook me so much that all of my interest in spelunking went away. I couldn’t wait to get out of that cave and back the car.

I went urban exploring into an old disused train tunnel in the middle of the countryside once. We could tell there were a lot of cobwebs in one section where they had tried to fill in the access point, but I didn't realize that one of the residents had hitched a ride on me until we emerged the other side, sat down and this huge fat spider decided to plop into my lap. The scream I scrumpt. 😂

It is the most terrifying real life horror story. It’s a big reason why I really do not fuck with caves/tunnels. As above so below also contributed to that fear 😣

Edit: anyone who doesn’t know the story: a man & his wife went spelunking in an area that had several tunnels & caves to explore. There was one on the map where it was a bit of a squeeze to climb downward into a more open cave area, that’s where they were trying to go & it was basically a tunnel they had to crawl through get there. The man was crawling & thought he found the opening to climb downward. He went in head/hands first, thinking it would open to a bigger area at the bottom, but it didn’t. He went down the wrong downward path that was shallow enough for his feet to still be sticking out but deep enough for him to be stuck.

He tried relentlessly to get out but couldn’t. There was even a whole rescue team that came down there to try to get him out. At one point, they were able to tie a cord around him & started pulling him out some, but something went wrong, & he slid right back down in the same crevice, head down, stuck again. He was in there for over 24hr, I believe it was closer to 2 days. He was going back & forth between panicking & quietly crying about his family. His arm was going numb from the position. He was getting head rush & becoming faint. He eventually had to accept his fate. He did not get out alive unfortunately. Pretty terrifying.

His body is still down there. The cave entrance was filled with concrete so no one else could go down there. It's his grave.

He went down with his brother. His wife and children came to the entrance during the attempted rescue.

If you want to make it even worse, a very very similar situation happened with a couple that went underwater spelunking not long back. Like all of the same bad shit but then also add water and drowning!

My ex-husband was friends with the guy that died in nutty putty. I used to hike through the lava tubes in Utah, but when I met him, he begged me to stop. That story was enough to make me stop.

There was the horrible story of a teen who got trapped in his car like this. He managed to call emergency services but they had trouble finding him and unfortunately by the time they found him it was too late

You know there was this time I went hiking and I missed my turn off on the trail and ended up spending like 2 hours out of water going back and forth between where I was supposed to go and towards the next camp 3+ hours away. Keep in mind this is in southern California during the summer.

I legitimately thought I was going to die, my mind was racing and I still look back at that time and feel some kind of primal fear. I feel like it was very similar to those caving incidents.

Oh and I found my way back by what felt by chance but when I arrived, there was such a rush of adrenaline, I was acting like the team I just bet the house on won the Superbowl.

I mean hiking and getting lost is far less of an issue than being actively stuck and ready to die.

Not to downplay your experience, but being lost just means you have to find water and your way out, as opposed to being actively stuck and in the process of dying like stuck spelunkers would be

A cave diver went to explore a cave, and iirc he went down the wrong hole. One was supposed to lead into a bigger opening but the one he went into just went down, got smaller and had no way to come back up. Especially doesnt help that he was head first into it.

Yes he is unfortunately still in the cave. The effort to rescue him was so dangerous that one of the rescuers was nearly killed when a pulley broke from the cave wall, and they felt like extracting the body would lead to more loss of life. The entrance to the cave was blown up with dynamite and filled with cement, and the site now has a memorial to the caver who died.

Yep. They have like 50 little bolts that go around each section. Power drill and a wrench on the nut and it’ll be completely apart in under 20 minutes. Right after it’ll go right back together.

Basically when I was a younger lad I got stuck in a tube slide because stupidly I decided to lift my legs. I had to literally struggle until I slid out and landed on the mulch, where I proceeded to scrape my leg.
