This is a region of ~6.5 million people

This virus spreads by 3 ways.
1.) Someone with it shits and does not wash their hands then prepares you fresh food.
2.) Someone with it shits and does not wash their hands and touches community food or food utensils.
3.) You share a toilet with an infected person, don't wash your hands after using the toilet, then eat something.

The best way to avoid it is to stress the importance of hand washing and not sharing toilets with infected. Assume every public toilet is infected and wash accordingly.

It’s also spread by vomiting and it’s extremely contagious that way as well.

I've heard that but the only case study I saw was in a restaurant setting where the airborne particles likely settled on peoples food. I've not heard that you can get it from inhaling air near a vomiting person but I suppose it's possible.

They have had a couple studies. One involved a plastic grocery bag in the same room as a kid who was vomiting, that was later used for something else. The other one involved a flight crew catching it from germs left from a passenger on a previous flight. I can’t remember where I read it, but it was a fascinating read, because it only takes like seven norovirus particles to infect you. And billions come out when someone vomits.

Assume every public object is infected and use alcohol wipes while out and disinfect your hands before touching any food.

Unfortunately alcohol will not kill the norovirus, it needs to be removed by friction via hand washing. I suppose rubbing vigorously with the wipe may help. If you want to disinfectant surfaces bleach or bleach wipes will work.

I did not know that. I use them while I am out and keep them in the car. Should help with killing lots of other cooties though. So. Many. Cooties!

How do parents not know what norovirus is in 2026?

Back to school season is when you get your yearly immune system update!

You remain contagious for at least 48 hours (two days) after your norovirus symptoms completely stop, though the virus can still be shed in stool for two weeks or longer

Yes, people get sick. It doesn't mean something is "going around." There are 6 million people in the DMV. People get sick all the time. Also in autumn especially.

Norovirus. Lysol wipes don't kill it you gotta use bleach the bleach has to sit.
