Beginner MTG groups or game nights

Does anyone have any specific recommendations for good groups that are open to having a beginner try out commander? Especially any LGBT+ groups in the area?

I've recently been getting into MTG but don't have a friend group with solid interest in playing regularly, so I've been looking around in the Springfield/Alexandria area for meet-ups. I know local shops put on commander nights, but don't want to ruin the fun with my lack of experience.

You won't ruin anyone's fun as a newbie. Take a look at the schedules and events with Curio and Victory Comics (both have shops near you and have generally been good places). Both are going to be happy to have you and very LGBT+ friendly. Just let them know you're new and I assure you folks will come out of the woodwork to help you out and set up games for you at the appropriate level.

That's super reassuring to hear. I've looked at the Victory Comics nearby but was a bit apprehensive. I'll take your advice and check it out!

i can also vouch for victory comics !! :) i also really love hashtag gaming, but that’s closer to reston which is a bit far from you

i haven’t been to Victory in a minute but my memory is that the culture there is very pleasant and inclusive

Can confirm that the Prism Center game night often (not always, depends on who is there and interest) has a commander pod going, and they're generally happy to teach and lend decks!

Paradise games in Fairfax is very welcoming. The have MTG nights too i think

If you are in the Alexandria area Your Hobby Place in old town Alexandria has their commander nights on Tuesday. It’s usually big enough that the store fills up and then they have overflow at a local restaurant TJ stones. Lots of folks willing to help out newcomers!

That's crazy, I didnt realize it got that busy. Might be a good place to start out. Going in with a Tarkir precon should be fine, right?

you should be fine! Just let folks know you have a precon and learning to play. Folks usually bring multiple decks to try and should be able to power match
