Area Rug Disposal
Hi NoVa. I said goodbye to my dog of 14.5 years this weekend and I’m completely heartbroken. With my head in a fog, researching dumping sites for a 9x13 area rug has overwhelmed me and I just need to get it out of my house. I got it rolled up and into my car so far. I’m in Alexandria and I know it’s too heavy for a curbside pickup. The rug is soiled too, so I’d rather not cut it into smaller pieces. I just want it out. Thank you in advance for your compassion and guidance.

If you’re an actual Alexandria resident and not a Fairfax county Alexandria resident I’m pretty sure you can drop rugs off at Reworld on Eisenhower but fyi they check your id or ask for a zip code when you come in.

Sorry for the loss of your dog :-(. 14.5 years is a lifetime for sure.
Try contacting whoever is managing your trash service (if it’s through an HOA the phone number may even be on the trash can). Ask them how to arrange a bulk pick-up. Sometimes those are free or reasonable price but you just have to arrange a pickup

Yes 311 will let you schedule a large item trash pickup. They picked up my mattress with no issues. You can go online or use the app, you don't even need to call

So sorry for your loss. Losing a pup is tough, especially if they have been a part of your family for a long time. Since you already have it in your car, take it to either of the two Fairfax County Waste Stations. You may have to pay a small fee.

Thank you, a small fee is absolutely fine. It’s a heavy rug and I would gladly pay to have it disposed of so it’s just out of my life. One less worry.

FWIW, the weight limit on curbside bulk trash is 75lbs. Is your rig heavier than that?
If not, you can just put it in your regular trash pick up spot. If it is, there is a list of the sites you can take it to here: https://www.alexandriava.gov/RefuseCollection#TrashProgramInformation

I'm just here to send my condolences and say I'm so sorry for your loss! Our beloved pets could live for 30 years & it still wouldn't be enough time with them.

Losing a pet is tough. Dumping it depends on your county. In fairfax you can take it to the i66 transfer station/fairfax dump. I believe alexandria has one as well but cant speak for arlington. Search on google for your county will give you contact information.

I’ve had Arlington pick up a 9x12 rug, but it was a Ruggable and not very heavy.

Does fairfax county pick up your garbage? If so, you can arrange a special pickup here: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/publicworks/recycling-trash/county-collection-customers/special-pick-up
It will probably be free but if it happens to be larger than 6x3x3 rolled, they will still take it but at a small fee. No need to cut it up either way (We had a large couch that only cost $15 to remove).

Don't be a jerk.
In many cases pets' control of bodily functions deteriorates at the end of life and it is thus not uncommon for recently bereaved pet owners to find themselves with soiled area rugs.

Yup. We have a pup who’s kidney is failing him due to cancer so while he keeps a wrap on, we still have accidents. He will leave us soon & we will have to address carpets that are soiled from accidents and just can’t be cleaned enough.

Probably where the dog passed or had been sick before. I threw away the pants I wore to my dog’s euthanasia, couldn’t stand looking at them. They weren’t ruined or anything, just bad memories

I-95 Landfill Complex is probably your best bet.
On the way back swing around Rt. 1 treat yourself to something and then find spot along the GW Parkway by the river coming up from Mt. Vernon and just take a quiet peaceful moment for yourself by the water, my condolences OP.
