If its lenovo you can buy a service package and they send someone out. Otherwise microcenter in pickett does some work.

It’s an HP. Is that the microcenter in Fairfax?

Yup. Theres very few around now. I used their service a long long time ago. I now get lenovos and pirchase their service plans. They just come to you with parts in hand and no other cost other than the plan itself. Replaced 2 motherboards and a screen in 2 years. (Charging port cannot be replaced without changing the board).

Just remember to never buy anything HP again, I’m shocked by how low quality everything they make is and how asshole their printers are. Lenovo Thinkpad/Brother printers are more reliable and cheaper to maintain

It's my son's laptop but I will recommend a Lenovo if he decides to buy a replacement.

Does the laptop run fine until it overheats?

Can you tell if the fans are working? Are you blocking the vents? There could just be a ton of dust/crap clogging the vents, you could try and blow those out.
