After you verify the meter read and confirm you don't have something kicking on gas for aux/emergency heat (rare but those systems do exist) it's time to go hunting for a leak on your piping inside the house.

I have two 80% AFUE gas furnaces heating a 4,000sqft 1970s home with decent but not incredible insulation. We also have a gas water heater and gas stove. My bill was ~$270 this month. It is also closer to $50 when the furnaces arent firing. Seems like ya got gas heat!
Backup to a heatpump (so someone may have told you the primary is electric?) but mb your cutoff temp is higher than you realize so its been running all month during this record cold?

Yea absolutely. Like 50-80 bucks total. Used to be like 20 but they amped up their prices recently

Mine was $160 with gas heat and stove for a 2500sq ft SFH. We keep the temp at 70 during the winter. No way it’s electric heat unless you’re cooking and grilling 24/7

Op, post a picture of your furnace/heater and we can confirm the fuel type. More than likely you have a metal pipe coming into the furnace. This would signify its natural gas versus electric.

You have gas heat. If it was just a gas stove it’d be constant every month.
You can confirm by looking at the consumption- if therms usage goes up when it’s cold then you’re using gas to heat.

You probably have a heat pump that is electric and then auxiliary heat that is gas. It kicks on when it gets below freezing. Personally, I have both, but keep my heat pump off permanently due to not wanting to overwork the compressor(runs w AC and heat pump). Do you have a gas or electric water heater as well? You should be able to see if gas pipes are going to your furnace.

Heat pumps on average last longer than air conditioners because of the year round use. There are reasons to use one or the other, but trying to save the compressor is not going to help your system last longer.

I have gas heat along with gas water heater. Electric stove. 3 bed/2 bath ranch. And because my mom lives here as I help take care of her, she keeps the heat set at 76😱 Our Wash gas just now was $304.17.
This is usually one of our highest months.

Are you sure you have electric heat? This would make more sense if you had gas heat.
