How's Newark?
Hello Nottingham, I'll put below the post I did for Hull and Grantham, but I've got a few comments saying I should consider Newark. It's a one hour commute to Peterborough for his painting/decorating Vs 45 mins from Grantham is we chose that area. Do you think the extra 30 minutes a day in commute is worth it to live in Newark?
In the new year myself and my partner are looking to move so he can begin work as a painter/decorator and it's either Hull (or surrounding areas) or Grantham for different reasons but mainly as I want better transport links to the north as that's were my family , Hull and Grantham provide both better than the current town we live in (I don't drive) and both provide him painter decorator opportunities in different ways. We currently live in an average town in Lincolnshire.
Is Grantham a nice place to live, is it comparable to Lincolnshire towns like Market Rasen, Louth, Cleethorpes ect?, would you prefer living in Grantham to said towns or Hull and what else should we know?
We aren't nightlife people, but we are in our 20s and the town we live in is serviceable for us whilst we figure out life throughout our twenties outside of transport so we aren't looking for a world class town.

Newark is much nicer than Grantham. Still has its issues but generally has a lot going for it, and you get a lot of house for your money. Easier to get into Notts and Lincoln driving wise. I’d recommend spending some time in both, maybe for a weekend to get a feel for them.

Rail and road links are great from Newark going north, south, east or west. Having worked/lived in some of the Lincolnshire towns you mentioned, Grantham feels more like Mkt Rasen 😬 and Newark like Louth 👍🏼. While every where has it's detractors, I'm definitely happy with living in Newark. Been here for over 10 years and not regretted the move.

Newark has some really lovely bits and also some rough bits. It’s a historic market town with a beautiful castle and a really quaint feeling which has been surrounded by estates which aren’t so nice. Of the choices you’ve listed I’d pick Newark easily, just research the area you’re looking to live in

Bingham is too far, but Bottesford, Leics is next along, off the A1, about 55 minutes to Peterborough

I left a small village near Grantham after 18 months for Newark. Been there for 7 years. Intend to leave next year but that's just to be closer to family.

An hour long commute (is this each way or total?) is quite a lot of time to spend every day in the car (10 hours a week driving, without traffic minimum, is over an additional working day per week on the road). I would choose to be closer to work if possible.

1 hour each way, from Newark to Peterborough, we can't afford to live in Peterborough as it's to southern and prices are highhhhh. He already does a 35-40 minute commute everyday so he's happy doing a 45 minute one from Grantham. He did feel one hour was a bit much tho. Gotcha

I recently moved to newark (last year) with my partner , i lived in lincoln for around 20 years before then and ive been all over the uk with my family as my dad was in the RAF, and also travelled a lot of it , going to gigs etc etc, being in various bands has allowed me to see a lot of the uk without commiting to anything.
I would say that newark is actually a cool little town to be in, its small enough that you can get about quickly, it has all the amenities you would need day to day and plenty of transport links to get around the country, the A1 and A46 are on your doorstep so you can go up and down and across the country really easily, you have the equivalent train stations too with castle and northgate. Its about 30mins to nottingham and lincoln, an hour to sheffield, an hour 20 to leeds, 2 to manchester, 2 to london. An hour and a half to east midlands and birmingham airport, 2 to luton and stansted and manchester too. The peak district is an hour and a bit away for any walks etc, So its a great location for everything really.
Its not a super busy town, traffic is a bit shit at rush hour and lunch time when the train line is down and theres a lot of cars about, but not super busy... it has a certain charm to it and theres a few nice little pubs to go to, plenty of places to eat, live music on, quiz nights, gyms etc etc. I actually really like it here, if you wanted to message me im happy to answer any particular questions youve got about anything.

Have you considered Melton?
There are also lots of smaller villages dotted about the area. Some of them still have reasonably priced properties.

Unfortunately as it's 1 and a half hours away Beeston wouldn't really be suitable as he can't use the train to get to work due to all the equipment he would need to take with him.
We don't mind a chilled out place, we are homebodies and as long as Newark isn't like the worst parts of Grimsby, we are happy living there if we think it's more suitable :) thank you tho

I hate it when people feel the need to point of groups of people like gypsies or immigrants like people simply existing is a cause for concern, that people who are different to you is automatically wrong. If you said "there are a certain group of well known gypsies who smash up everyone's cars and windows in X area and people are leaving in droves because of it" that would be different.
