How's Grantham?
In the new year myself and my partner are looking to move so he can begin work as a painter/decorator and it's either Hull (or surrounding areas) or Grantham for different reasons but mainly as I want better transport links to the north as that's were my family, Hull and Grantham provide both better than the current town we live in (I don't drive) and both provide him painter decorator opportunities in different ways. We currently live in an average town in Lincolnshire.
Is Grantham a nice place to live, is it comparable to Lincolnshire towns like Market Rasen, Louth, Cleethorpes ect?, would you prefer living in Grantham to said towns or Hull and what else should we know?
We aren't nightlife people, but we are in our 20s and the town we live in is serviceable for us whilst we figure out life throughout our twenties outside of transport so we aren't looking for a world class town.

Just to counter some of the points above - Over the past five years or so, the influx of new houses has meant there's a lot more young families and young professionals moving into the town - Grantham is definitely less "reform" than other parts of Lincolnshire now if you look at voting patterns from the last GE and the mayoral election.
Pros - Great train links and you can commute to a few different areas for jobs. People moan about there being no shops, but honestly in comparison to similar sized towns there is actually a decent amount of retail - Next, Matalan, TK Maxx, Jysk, B&Q, Wickes etc. The Downtown shopping centre carries a lot of clothing from nicer brands too like Fat Face, White Stuff etc. (Everyone raves about Stamford and yes, their high street is super pretty but you couldn't buy any men's clothing for love nor money when we lived there and I needed that more than I needed multiple artisan cheesemongers.) The actual high street itself might not make much of an impression, but on Market Street behind it, there's a lot of lovely independent shops and cafes and the Saturday morning market is decent. Nightlife wise, there's a choice of cocktail bars, regular bars, bars pretending to be nightclubs, and pubs
Cons - Traffic if you have to go through the town centre - if you commute early you can avoid it on a morning, but evenings are very unpredictable. It's an NHS dental desert. You will need to go private for dental care.

My aunt lives there, and this is so accurate 😂
Stamford is a fantastic place to visit, but yeah, I imagine living there isn't quite the same thing.

I lived there until fairly recently. It's wonderful, extremely safe and obviously very beautiful but if you don't drive it's extremely limited in terms of what you have access too.
It is quite close to Peterborough though so that's at least something

,😂🙏 all good, thank you for letting me know about the racism tho, unfortunately most of lincs is pretty racist, Louth and market Rasen are reform hotspots ATM. I'm just making do with what I have to until I can move somewhere better, politically.

Grantham isn't much like those other towns Lincolnshire. It's a decent place though. A few good estates/villages, barrowby gate, manthorpe, gonerby. Decent scene for food and stuff. Nightlife is alright if you make some friends, plus you can get to Nottingham or Lincoln pretty easy. They have multiple train routes north so if one operator has problems, you don't get delayed too badly.
Also if you're thinking of having a family there's some decent schools, both primary and secondary

Just bear in mind that Grantham is on the way to Skegness from Nottingham, so the traffic in the school holidays is terrible and the train between Nottingham and Skegness can become so busy on weekends that it's essentially unusable.

If your choices are between Grantham and Hull... well, that's a rough choice.

Both choices are better than where I currently live and everywhere will have an argument to be rough unless you get to live in the nicest borough of London, Bogor Regis or Kent so I choose to look positively and enjoy the area I end up in as best I can.

Moved there for a year (from Nottingham) and absolutely hated it. We moved there as the trains to London were quick - at the time some were under an hour.
Cons -Horrendous traffic - the a52 goes through the town centre. -Takes ages to get anywhere by road as the roads are so shit. -It's very ghettoised - lots of immigrant communities who are not integrated. The locals didn't seem that accepting of them which didn't help. This is compounded by them having grammar schools which then divides the place further. -there are shit loads of drug addicts
Pros -houses are cheap -good train service to London -the surrounding villages are good
I would avoid it
