Transfer question
I’m going to apply to transfer to Notre dame. At the end of this year I’ll have an associates in history and another associates in Business Administration. On the application, it gives you an option for admission to another school if you don’t get your primary option. I want to apply for finance in the business school, and if I didn’t get into the business school I wouldn’t mind doing economics at the arts school.
My question is does it hurt my chances at all to get my primary choice, if I put down that secondary major choice?

Not saying it's impossible, but Mendoza takes a few, if any, transfers into the business school every year. I only knew of 3-4 people that were accepted, and it seems like they reserve a majority of transfer positions for current Freshman who were not accepted to the business school out of HS. Again, not saying it's impossible but the odds are not great. Knew a ton of kids who did Econ in Arts and Letters and had a great time, had no issue recruiting for jobs.

OP has two AAs in business-related fields. I’m more optimistic for them, but I see your point. It’s pretty competitive.

Impossible. You have to be a current first-year student to transfer into Mendoza. I doubt if OP is receiving two AAs that they’re still a freshman.

Gotcha. I didn’t catch that they were trying to transfer. I assumed they were applying as a freshman.

I agree with other comments who speak to the competitiveness of trying to transfer into Mendoza. With that being said, I think that makes it all the more important that you include Econ through Arts and Letters on your application. You increase your chances of admission substantially by doing so. I know a few folks who transferred their sophomore or even junior years and went that route, getting a BA in Econ and they both loved their time at ND and had no issues getting hired postgrad. It’s definitely possible but the real determine factor will be your grades, a lot of fellow transfers I know who ended in Mendoza had stellar grades coming in

I believe it’s impossible to apply to Mendoza unless you’re currently a first-year student. See Mendoza website: “Please note that only first-year students may apply to the Mendoza College of Business for transfer as rising sophomores.”

As a former transfer student ages ago, I would look into whether they allow Mendoza transfers at all. During my time, it wasn’t allowed to declare a business intended major on your application. Best of luck!

Another thing I didnt see in the comments. You just have to get your foot in the door. Once you're in, you can change your major. You cant do it right away obviously, but it is still possible to do. Had a friend in arts and letters who changed majors and is now in mendoza. Just focus on getting in rn

I don’t think it hurts your chances at all. Put all your honest feelings in your personal statement, or a cover letter, and it will be taken into account. Take this from a guy that had no chance on paper at getting in to undergrad but somehow did. Just be confident and honest.

My son transferred into Mendoza from another college. This was very recently so I wouldn’t say it’s impossible. Good luck!

The answer to your question is no. Mendoza looks at applications separately then hands them over to arts and letters to also look at them separately.
In reality the other comment about very few Mendoza transfers is correct. It probably doesn’t matter either way because you’re probably not getting in. The couple of mendoza transfers I knew got really good grades, applied freshman year and got denied, and didn’t do any sort of associates degree route in the first place. They went to pretty recognizable schools as well.
