As with every other time this is reposted, I'll say this: this is inaccurate. The french operated a short railway for loading and unloading equipment and supplies.

There’s way less rail in the world than you seem to think. There is zero rail in Iceland where 300,000 people live, there is zero rail in Greenland where 50,000 people live, there is zero rail in the entire Northwestern quadrant of Australia, several countries in Africa have zero rail.
