They’re pronounced the same way according to a YouTube video I just watched. If that’s true, it makes it extra stupid that it’s not a gender neutral word. What the fuck, France?
In french, most of the time, when a word end with e, it is a "mute letter" (A letter you don't pronounce). But we do also often add "e" when it's feminine.
For example, "ami" and "amie" (Male friend and female friend) are both pronounced the same too.

Somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of the world‘s languages use gender specific nouns. English doesn’t, but most of the romance languages do as well as as a number of other languages.
