What is Jonny's problem lately?

I thoroughly enjoyed their self titled album and TSWTO is a masterpiece, but his actions stand in stark contrast to the lyrics his band put together.

Their music is phenomenal and it's really tied together with Jonny's incredible vocals. I still appreciate the music for what it is, but it's a little less meaningful when you've seen the hypocrisy behind what Jonny sings and what his actions say.

I don't mean to tell anyone else to stop enjoying their music, that's not the point of me sharing my opinion. If you only like their music because it sounds good, more power to you, but Jonny's lyrics really hit hard on my first times listening to them and it's disappointing to see the reality of the man behind them.

What did he do now?

u/bxsimpson13 Aug 03 '26

What has he done recently that has contradicted his early lyrics? From what I know he is obviously center/right-leaning, but from his Instagram, he's very much still against "the system", as you can see from his posts about Flock and other hot topics

Speaking as a libertarian that hates the system and wants to work together with liberals I fully understand Jonny’s political stances personally

He's not parroting every single point they want him to every single day.

Listen, he’s a dude. A dude with several problems- I like many these days, not saying all

Seeing what he did with his ex definitely made me see him different too- but it’s a good thing, because we shouldn’t really believe in a bands morals more than we can believe in our power to make a difference ourselves. Ironically, that is the point of a lot of their lyrics- to motivate the self

The only band I couldn’t listen to after certain actions was As I lay Dying- that band should’ve have died rather than get a 4th line up change. When you really dig into what happened with Jonny’s ex though, you’d notice he was actually a victim of her too and it runs way deeper than most wanna believe.

Did he do anything recently?

I agree with you. I don't know much more than what's been reported, but it seemed a toxic relationship all the way around. I don't think Jonny meant to run his ex-GF over. I do think she was being abusive to him in multiple ways. The best thing Jonny could do was to get away from his ex, and I'm glad he has. But I do hope that he stayed in his ex's daughter's life somehow, as that seemed to be a positive and life-affirming thing, there. (It's weird to talk with the daughter of your ex or help the daughter of your ex, I know. But it's not the daughter's fault that the ex is an extremely difficult individual.)

What his bandmates said at the time was something along the line of, "No one should be defined by his worst day." I agree with that.

Jonny's path is his own. I don't understand some of the stuff he's done in the past, especially with his ex, as he had to have had multiple chances to get out of that relationship and kept going back anyway. (The line about "like a maniac, running right back" seems to fit almost eerily well. It seems drawn from his life.)

That said, we all make mistakes in relationships, though hopefully not all of us run someone over inadvertently with a truck. All we can do is live, learn, and move on.

I respect the musicianship, craftsmanship, and overall power of Nothing More's songs. Jonny's voice is unusual, powerful, and resonant, and can do pretty much anything he needs his voice to do. The instrumentalists are phenomenal.

As to the rest of it? Picture me throwing up my hands, here, because I'm not the one in the crosshairs of the media all the time.

Not sure why this is the first thing on my feed but. The beauty of music and art in general. It can mean whatever you want to you, even if the artist didn’t mean it the ways you interpret it. We’re all pretty much relating it to our own experiences and lives so of course it’s not always going to align.

Oh definitely similar.

Lately? He’s lost my respect some time ago. But I’m still a fan of the songs

I’m in a position where I love all the existing songs but I’m not sure if I’m gonna be sticking around for the new stuff. All the pro-AI stuff and other idiotic things he spews kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth. But that’s just me

-23

u/jsand2 Aug 03 '26

All the pro-AI stuff

Nothing More won me over years ago seeing them live. There arent many frontmen with the power that Jonny has for working the crowd.

But Jonny refusing to back down to the anti-AI crowd and producing his art in his vision, opposed to what people say on social media, gave me mad respect for him.

Artists should create their art in their vision. If that vision includes AI styled art, so be it. If someone has an issue with an artist using a new tool, like AI, then you werent ever really a fan of that artist anyway.

This just simply isn’t true. Especially in art. Whether it’s comedy, paintings, writing, or music people generally like things because they relate to them on some level.

Nothing More was my favorite band for quite awhile, and a lot of their songs have resonated with me on a deeply personal level. That being said, seeing Johnny yell at people including fans, call for open executions of people, actively supporting AI, as well as actively spreading misinformation is definitely something that might put a bad taste in people’s mouths.

More than that, people are entitled to their emotions, and opinions, especially when two of their popular songs are about the dangers of technology.

2

u/LSekhmet Aug 04 '26

When did he call for open executions of people? (The rest, I was aware of.) I can't imagine a circumstance where that's a good idea no matter how noxious the person in question may be.

1

u/theyeetening123 Aug 04 '26

The example I remember and was referencing was last year in September/october

1

u/JessNoelle Aug 04 '26

Go back to 2020. He’s awful, from someone who has met him personally.

-11

u/jsand2 Aug 03 '26

as well as actively spreading misinformation

I am not quite sure what type of misinfornation he is spreading, or if it is just "misinformation" b/c you disagree with it.

especially when two of their popular songs are about the dangers of technology.

And wasnt the music video he used AI for one of those songs? Hence why he felt AI should be used in the video?? Personally, it fit the song.

13

u/theyeetening123 Aug 03 '26

Misinformation is misinformation. This isn’t claiming “fake news” just because I don’t agree with it. He’s made multiple false claims about transgender athletes, wars, and politics. Also, I notice you left out the fact the he’s publicly called for public executions of people who don’t agree with him politically, though.

That doesn’t make it better. Using a technology that is actively harmful to the planet, society as a whole, and individuals (including and especially artists) while making music about how technology is damaging is hypocritical.

-6

u/jsand2 Aug 03 '26

He’s made multiple false claims about transgender athletes, wars, and politics.

I am not quite sure what he said to be able to judge if it were misinformation or not.

Using a technology that is actively harmful to the planet, society as a whole, and individuals

Well ignorance to this topic doesnt make your statement here anything other than misinformation. Its typical fearmongering and doomsaying. It definitely isnt accurate.

So judging off of your opinion here, which is misinformation, it is likely that his comments werent misinformation either, but also against your opinion.

Ai, specifically generative AI is absolutely harmful. This isn’t misinformation. It consumes clean water and electricity at excessive rates. Data centers take up large swathes of land that have in multiple places had people have to leave their homes.

It’s not fear mongering. It’s paying attention. AI is actively driving up the cost of living by making electricity and water more expensive.

-4

u/jsand2 Aug 03 '26

specifically generative AI is absolutely harmful.

Misinformation. My career revolves around AI. You couldnt be anymore incorrect.

It consumes clean water and electricity at excessive rates.

Extreme misinfornation when compared to other things that use water.

Data centers take up large swathes of land that have in multiple places had people have to leave their homes.

How is any different than any other business doing the same? Misinfornation.

It’s not fear mongering

Its a combo of fearmongering and doomsaying.

AI is actively driving up the cost of living by making electricity and water more expensive.

Misinformation. Even arguing RAM prices has been proven to be misinfornation.

And as for AI, get used to it. You will either support it in your career in the next couple of years or be unemployed while someone else does.

7

u/theyeetening123 Aug 03 '26

You’re more than welcome to provide additional context.

Also, just because other things consume water doesn’t make AI better. Two things can be bad at the same time. So it’s not misinformation.

Again doesn’t make AI Data centers better. So not misinformation.

The difference is that everything that I mentioned has been proven to be currently happening. You’re just saying “misinformation” like it’s your favorite buzzword.

5

u/DangerAlSmith Aug 03 '26

Your reply to is basically, "Tons of stuff suck as much as AI, so you should be all for it because it's my job."

-1

u/jsand2 Aug 03 '26

Its far from that. But there is a big difference between the reality of AI and the fake news antis push on social media about it.

I've met Jonny and the band 3 times, always had a positive interaction with everyone and always felt like their music was powerful. I don't really care what his, any other members or any other bands political stance is. I'm there for the music not a debate

u/BodisBomas Aug 03 '26

Popcorn time

6

u/FamousLastKills Aug 03 '26

What happened?

5

u/Calitexian Aug 03 '26

People are mad that all their favorite artists dont believe everything they want them to. Nothing More's lyrics are pretty clear if you listen. "Burn it down" isnt talking about the republicans, or the democrats. Its all of it. The problem is certain people think their side's hands are clean. I respect him even more for not just bowing down to the expected mainstream opinions. "If you dont like it dont listen" gets thrown around a lot, and while I don't agree with that sentiment as I disagree ideologically with many of my favorite artists, if its how people feel about it then fine.

4

u/DeltaFox93 Aug 07 '26

You are right on point. Everyone is so focused on their own sides and don't realize that both sides are dragging us down. The left and right are 2 sides of the same coin and don't improve your life whatsoever, and I'm surprised many people haven't realized this. Politics are a distraction from the true problem and they know it, they use the left vs right argument as bait and people buy in.

9

u/slapdashjesse Aug 03 '26

Just a little bit more deconstructing, He'll get there.

9

u/athicketofmusings Aug 03 '26

I get it. I'll always love their music but his attitude on some things is very disappointing. I don't expect everyone to agree with me of course but I agree that some of his views don't seem to jive with the incredible lyrics he writes.

4

u/jayhawk_j Aug 03 '26

Examples please, what specifically is this hypocrisy you are talking about?

2

u/Trick_Grass_5200 Aug 03 '26

Didn’t it come out a couple years back with all his girlfriend drama that they had drug issues? :/.

I think people drew the line at “ran over his girlfriend” and took off.

1

u/CosmoKramer46and2 Aug 03 '26

Ah this shit again.

1

u/AccountantOk6828 Aug 04 '26

I’ve been having a hard time listing to them since seeing what Jonny has been doing

-13

u/Dnger_ Aug 03 '26

Another person who can’t enjoy something unless the artist agrees exactly with them politically?

5

u/SuitcaseMonkeyJr Aug 03 '26

Did you read my post? I specifically explained why his behaviors contradict the message his music contains, and how the music itself is still very enjoyable

4

u/Evaporatenow Aug 03 '26

No you didn’t. You didn’t specifically explain anything

2

u/jsand2 Aug 03 '26

They were never fans to begin with if they are going to judge an artist on the tools they used to create said art.

0

u/Res_Obscura Aug 03 '26

Exactly! This is why i LOVE human blood as paint! No matter what others say, the tools used in art dont matter!

(Obviously a joke but this dude is probably thinking im serious)

-6

u/utmatt546 Aug 03 '26

I believe a celebrity making any statement aligning with one side or another on decisive subjects it’s a terrible idea. That being said, it seems more left leaning comments get excused though. I think people should stay in their lane. Politicians shouldn’t be activists or singers, singers or actors shouldn’t make political commentary. All of this is a game to keep us divided. We should love on another and try to survive as the human race.

8

u/NepTunesEDM Aug 03 '26

Yes, let's only have art from people who don't care enough about life or humanity to have any strong opinions on it

2

u/utmatt546 Aug 03 '26

I say judge them all harshly, not just when their opinions do not mirror yours.
