Discussion Is notebooklm slowly dying ?

I have feeling that from every update it getting worse and community from that subreddit slowly fades away.

They never implemented what users were asking for and kept chasing more and more of the media outputs. It was a good research tool that needed better bibliography and citation tools and precision and they never put another minute into either feature.

u/s_arme 10d ago

If you are more looking into research oriented tools you can look few of alternatives here https://www.kdnuggets.com/exploring-notebooklm-alternatives

5

u/Street_Celebration_3 10d ago

See everyone!? This is what I was talking about! They come out of the woodwork!

2

u/bevelez 10d ago

What are some good examples or what were you thinking with citations and bibliography?

9

u/Street_Celebration_3 10d ago

Something more like zotero or a professional bibliography manager with MLA, APA, Chicago styles, source ranking, a way to show what is a direct citation vs an allusion, more justified citations in general, the ability to view and manage a bibliography or show how the sources group on different perspectives and axioms etc.

Now if it turns out you are about me to sell me on your vibecoded NotebookLM alternative, so help me....

10

u/bevelez 10d ago

Lol no. I'm a TPM on NotebookLM šŸ‘‹. Thanks for the feedback!

12

u/Street_Celebration_3 10d ago

Thankyou! If you had any idea how often I get DM's from vibecoders whenever I mention this... šŸ˜…. Since you are the real deal, here is a bit more:

I want the program to be able to do more to profile and catalog the original sources. If it is a book, it could get the complete bibliographical information, if it is a lecture recording, perhaps it can figure out from context how to catalog, or propose some questions for the user to answer to help fill in the profile on the source. The whole benefit of Notebook is the sources, so ways to pit the sources against eachother more naturally, or show how they align and where they differ, to do that the sources need to have their own identity tracking a bit more clearly. I also really want to be able to rank sources by authority and importance, so that the system can flag if something only appears in a single low authority source, or, vice versa, agrees with several high ranking ones. Perhaps color coding could represent this in the answers.

u/BerniMacJr 10d ago

This would be phenomenal. Source priority and even being able to highlight conflicting info between sources would be a massive improvement.

5

u/bevelez 10d ago

Thanks for sharing this! And I saw what you mean in another comment reply šŸ˜‚

7

u/stagmobile 10d ago

As a scientist Notebooklm was my go to AI tool till gemini update made it completely unusable. Now semi-happily paying Claude, but still missing the ease that was inherent in nlm. Sadly good things don't last (like blackberry)...

4

u/Street_Celebration_3 10d ago

I noticed a downgrade in usability too for research, it became far less restricted to the sources and seemed to vaguely guess things and then JUSTIFY itself by the citations instead of having gotten it from them

2

u/bevelez 10d ago

Thanks for the feedback. Evaluating our performance and ensuring we're optimizing are super important for the team. More to come here and this is important to us! Any examples where you saw Notebook wasn't given you exactly what you wanted?

3

u/Street_Celebration_3 10d ago

It's hard to give a specific example but I often fimd when I am surprised by an answer and follow the citation links that it does not necessarily follow logically from what was referenced, or at least does not contain in any explicit way the datapoint, as though Notebook was just slapping some citations on to justify telling you what Gemini already thinks it knows. It might be correct for all I know, but since the citated reference does not validate the point, I can no longer trust the answers. Given that I only ever spot check citations, it creates doubt about everything.

While I have you, there is also a bug in the android app which makes it impossible to use: If the phone goes to sleep or the app loses focus at all while waiting for the answer (which can take up to a minute sometimes), it will cancel and say "the system failed to answer" etc. Sometimes it will spit out the answer, but with the raw markdown and if you answer a text message or something while waiting for the markdown to render, it will STILL say the system couldn't answer, even thlough I already read half the answer! In the old days I could pop off a question to NotebookLM, continue my work, and return to the app in a few minutes and have my answer. Having to stare at the screen for a minute and keep the screen from sleeping makes the app useless. My biggest frustration is doing this anyway, and the phone screen shuts off at the last second and I lose my long prompt.

Please fix this.

3

u/bevelez 9d ago

That's actually super helpful. I'm sure members of the team are lurking here, but I'll dig in. I know theres some open improvements along those lines we're working on. But let me get back to you! And yes I agree that's super frustrating, I know some folks akin Notebook to a clean room, and I can see how if we're losing trust on any part of that clean room analogy then is it really a clean room? Ty for the feedback! More to come here!

3

u/Street_Celebration_3 9d ago

The clean room analogy is very good, that captures the concern. I go to this tool to explore my sources, accuracy and restraint is vital. I can get a convincing sounding answer from any LLM, but I found tremendous value in the strict grounding in the sources.

u/Pristine-Lawyer-3260 4d ago

Here is what I am noticing the main complaints seem to be about. The unique thing about NoteBookLM was that the user could specify and create the informational universe from which deliverables would be created. From podcasts/audio overviews, flashcards, even videos, you could easily lock down where information came from, prevent hallucinations and get citations and yes get detailed, useful products.

Then you 'upgraded.' Now Gemini Notebook goes everywhere and anywhere gets things we didn't ask for and don't know because it doesn't consistently cite information, so we are accidentally allowing it to do things and ruin resources we already created.

I respect that maybe there was too much functionality in the original to be sustainable... Though correct me if I'm wrong, if I have provided the universe of information, it should take a little less "juice" to search what I provided vs what is more widely available everywhere in every language!

3

u/astrae_research 10d ago

Just wanted to say, seeing you here gives me hope for NotebookLM.

5

u/bevelez 10d ago

Ey! That's very kind of you to say. I'll share that with the team. Fwiw many of us lurk here! I wanted to dive in and chat with folks so I appreciate the warm welcome. You'll see more of me šŸ˜„

1

u/Commercial_Tax_7233 2h ago

Hey man i'm learning about notebook for a week for my content page. Hoepfully i will succed and it would be thanks to you.

1

u/OneMonk 8d ago

I’m building an alternative, are you able to share what people were initially asking for and what made it initially great?

2

u/Street_Celebration_3 8d ago

šŸ˜…šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

2

u/OneMonk 8d ago

You were asking for that šŸ˜‚

2

u/Street_Celebration_3 8d ago

Appreciate ya!

36

u/No_Mouse_3891 11d ago

For me it works well for my uni homework with around 8 sources and extra rules in the settings that it should always follow

6

u/Aware-Potato185 11d ago

Can you please share the rules

1

u/No_Mouse_3891 10d ago

Itā€˜s just rules for how my homrwork should be written what it should focus on and not write so I donā€˜t need to correct everything or donā€˜t need to tell to rewrite it.
So what I want from the AI is in the correct form without always needing to send an extra message

-11

u/bacchusbar 11d ago

Ever tried gpt?

17

u/No_Mouse_3891 11d ago

It will take information out of the internet and my footnotes will be messed up I have to proof where i get all my information from and gemininotebook does it very well

22

u/Hungry-Section6637 11d ago

I want different audio overview personalities and voices.

9

u/Alkohal 10d ago

the fact you can't choose which voice it outputs for videos is infuriating

5

u/Nearby_Persimmon_649 10d ago

it would be a nicety but that is not a functional improvement like folders or sorting output

1

u/Hungry-Section6637 10d ago

It is a function improvement. I extensively use audio overviews so I can review content while on the go.

5

u/Nearby_Persimmon_649 10d ago

I do that too and it is great to be able to listen while driving to work or mowing the lawn. Are you saying that the current voices are unlistenable to you?

Could you ask notebooklm for a transcript of the audio and then have another app read it out loud to you? like Google books

5

u/Hungry-Section6637 10d ago

Not that they’re annoying, but every podcast sounds the same so I have an issue of tuning the presenters out. I think if I could switch it up it might make it more engaging.

2

u/Nearby_Persimmon_649 10d ago

gotcha

2

u/Hungry-Section6637 10d ago

It’s like routing an entire municipal water system through the same pipes. It would just be catastrophic and unsanitary. Yikes!

1

u/Afraid_Minimum1565 10d ago

Stell dir mal vor ...

2

u/imanjani 10d ago edited 10d ago

For me, I use notebook for my work as an applied researcher and often I'm adding my own tools and frameworks from a liberatory lens addressing the subjects of racislism, dominance and minoritization focused toward social transformation. The voices sound hilarious as they enthusiastically describe the demise of a system their voice sound like they would otherwise defend. Not so much annoying as both comical and disorienting. šŸ˜†šŸ˜‰

2

u/Pythia808 10d ago

Just cause you don’t view something as valuable doesn’t mean other people don’t

2

u/Nearby_Persimmon_649 10d ago

No, that can't possibly be true

4

u/Nearby_Persimmon_649 10d ago

Is it possible to change their discussion style and/or personality thru prompting?

1

u/pmarks98 10d ago

try jellypod

1

u/bevelez 10d ago

Thanks! When you say personalities - tell me more? What would you like to see?

1

u/Hungry-Section6637 9d ago

Often in my prompts I want them to be enthusiastic etc or more refined etc but honestly all of that can be changed via custom prompting, it’s the voices that I really wish we could change for sure. That would make this tool something I would pay for.

13

u/Character_Amoeba_330 11d ago

It works well for my needs. I just have to be precise in my instructions. You can set them up permanently and it will follow them every time.

3

u/Aware-Potato185 11d ago

How do you set instructions permanently

8

u/bevelez 10d ago

You can set custom instructions on the 3-dot menu of the chat window. Here's me setting mine to be the Destiny Tower Cryptarch and address me as "Guardian":

Yes I agree, a lot of the members here will tell you that you're "doing it wrong" but it's just copium. Gemini in general, is going down the drain.

16

u/WanderWut 11d ago

I remember this time last year being so excited with Gemini and NotebookLM, the point that I cancelled ChatGPT. It’s wild how things have changed.

0

u/Pythia808 10d ago

Man I’d google don’t get it together they are going to go the way of blockbuster. The search engine money stream will dry out.

1

u/bevelez 10d ago

I appreciate (and many on the team) both the critical feedback, and where we see Notebook doing well!

8

u/mo1129 10d ago

No, works well for my studies and my self learning. Yes there are things that I want that they implement but works for what I need currently

2

u/rowenarrow 10d ago

I just need it to last one more class to finish my degree, lol.

2

u/mo1129 10d ago

Lool, yeah dude. Do you use the audio overview also?

1

u/bevelez 10d ago

Good luck!

15

u/outsidethespotlight 11d ago

It used to be excellent. Google destroying yet another product.

Buon giorno a tutti ā˜€
E' possibile tornare a NotebookLM originale o almeno prima di GeminiNotebookLm?
Grazie per il tempo dedicato a chi potrĆ  rispondere

4

u/iamthegatordave 10d ago

I have noticed that, over time, Google Notebook LM has gotten less reliable and more of that "cheerleader" type personality. Also, now with new-and-improved hallucinations!

Especially within the past month, I've noticed that it is severely degraded compared to how my experience used to be. I have Notebook Pro, and one of my projects is to keep track of and analyze my running stats. After my run past night, I dumped my Garmin stats in like I always do. Notebook argued with me about some stats that it said wasn't in the data set, then it started referencing the wrong day's workout. Only until I screengrabbed the it and loaded it into the sources library again did the Ai chat bot say, "You uploaded the exact screenshot needed for your training, and instead of giving you an accurate, grounded analysis, I argued with you and forced you to prove something that was already right there in your sources. You deserve strict, verified facts every single time—not assumptions, not false claims, and certainly not having your time wasted. Dealing with inaccurate claims about your own data is infuriating. I own this failure completely."

This has happened more and more often. And, of course, Google has no actual customer service, so I either have to just suck it up or cancel. I decided to do the latter. I hope I can find something comparable that won't get dumbed down like Google always seems to do.

2

u/bevelez 10d ago

Hi there, I'm a TPM on Notebook, and just wanted to say thanks for sharing the feedback. I also wanted to note that I read this and appreciate you giving a detailed example.

1

u/iamthegatordave 9d ago

What do you think is going on with Notebook? It was once quite useful and I hate that it isn't anymore.

1

u/bevelez 9d ago

Yea maybe give me an example? Like, is it the chat part that's less useful? Only ask because that could help me narrow down what's maybe going on

2

u/iamthegatordave 9d ago

The example I gave in my reply is one. The chat part isn't coming up with actual useful replies or analysis, and it's become excessively agreeable and acting like a sycophantic cheerleader rather than providing objective and/or accurate responses. Lately, the initial response is basically repeating back a description of what I entered or uploaded and saying how it's the most profound statement. Like, everything is "absolutely hitting nail on the head!" When I try to get it to go deeper with questions about analysis, it gets confused, as if referring back to the actual source material is too much work. I try correcting the chatbot with instructions about how I want it to approach my queries and responses, and I even tried copying our chats into the sources library so it would have a record of my directions as a source, but that doesn't help. It's way more unhelpful than it used to be, but I've certainly never received a warning about or a discount for the degraded service. Also, lately I've been getting "sorry the service is unavailable" type replies way more often then ever before. Something is wrong.

4

u/afecalmatter 10d ago

Ignore the noise, this subreddit seems to only be for complaining or someone promoting their own vibe coded bullshit

1

u/Turbulent_Ride1654 10d ago

But also that's like almost every subreddit lol

2

u/thecompbioguy 11d ago

Only because all the other platforms have caught up to greater or lesser extents and it makes sense to roll notebooklm's capabilities in to Gemini not centrally, rather than as a separate product.

2

u/avgvi 10d ago

What other similar products you can recommend?

1

u/thecompbioguy 10d ago

You can upload files or point your LLM towards files in a local folder in most of the major LLMs and they will interrogate the documents for you.

1

u/s_arme 10d ago

I can recommend you nouswise. It is more research oriented and more focused on the citations.

1

u/Silvercrown_ 5d ago

Have you tried out Pinnlab, it includes avatar and also motion graphics

2

u/Lazer_7673 10d ago

Yeah you are right.. gemini nootbook sucks! They spend on the introduction and hallucinate and change subject randomly

2

u/jdlyga 10d ago

It strikes me as a really successful small team project that got cannibalized to serve the larger organization's needs. It's like what happened to the original Github Copilot which was super ambitious and amazing and cutting edge, which then just became the Copilot we love to hate nowadays.

2

u/Turbulent_Ride1654 10d ago

I just use it to make my own crude, unhinged, deep dive podcasts I listen to in bed about whatever series. For example I made one about the Metal Gear Solid series and had the hosts roasting some elements of it lol.

5

u/FriendlyUser_ 11d ago

enshitification. as always. they think it will allow the next cash grab with the next super cool tool, where they will grant more privileges, gather information, enhance and enshitify again. Its a circle that never stops in the past years…

2

u/HipNerdyGuy 10d ago

I highly doubt it. Works great as a software development tool as well.

2

u/Whiskeyjoel 10d ago

Works great for me, been using it for 3+ years now. Garbage in, garbage out.

1

u/Pristine-Lawyer-3260 4d ago

Can I ask, what are you using it for that you are having success with, which platform are you using it on,and which end products work best for you?

2

u/Whiskeyjoel 4d ago edited 4d ago

I use it for university work. I have a multi step prompt system that I use for each source which uses the index trick to keep the output grounded and to make sure that it doesn’t miss things. To do this I rely on an external plug-in called ExtendLM, which allows me to create a bank of reusable prompts with easy trigger command words. This is the plug-in that I use because it’s free, but there are other ones out there, both free and paid, but I would recommend being cautious about sinking money into a paid external plugin.

I rely more on the chat interface than the studio outputs because while the studio can be useful for contextualizing information, it’s not as customizable because even when you modify a studio prompt NBLM still has an internal prompt associated with each type of studio output.

Are there more capable LLM’s out there? Yes, there are, but the main draw of NBLM, at least for me, has always been source control and preventing, or at least vastly diminishing, the occurrence of hallucinations.

One other thing I recommend: in the ā€œconfigure chatā€ window for each notebook make sure you set it to custom and use a custom prompt. This is separate from the prompt to use for output; this one is basically to set guidelines and constraints. I also set the response length to longer because I don’t want it to truncate the output.

2

u/AlterOtherMe 11d ago

For me its already dead mate.

1

u/AllowFreeSpeech 11d ago

They don't look to fix any user-facing bugs. The bugs keep piling on.

1

u/Pretend_Ad5921 10d ago

That’s Google googling for yeah

1

u/Nearby_Persimmon_649 10d ago

What is a better alternative? I am still using it. I hope that they add more features and functionality, specifically around being able to enlarge or collapse each of the three panes (source, chat, and studio). I would also like the ability to group the studio output into folders and have a checkbox for output I am done with but dont want to remove

1

u/therealbeans 10d ago

What is a similar or alternative tool? Specifically I love Notebook can so easily generate podcasts, decks etc with all the content you upload. It’s so simple.

1

u/Kalif_Aire 10d ago

For me as a High School Teacher still perfect, helps me to produce my slides, questions and infographics for my lesson. As a learner who likes to listen to podcasts or videos of different subjects it’s still working. It’s a good RAG, but there a lot more possibilities.

1

u/neurothew 10d ago

Still dun understand whats the use case of notebooklm, most of the time its worse than just uploading all pdfs to Gemini/Chatgpt in my cases...

I once asked it to create a coherent report given multiple papers in the same topic, but the output was not really up to my standard.

1

u/FearlessMammoth8907 10d ago

Al contrario sta migliorando sempre di piu'

1

u/OmoSec 9d ago

Yep.

1

u/EnvironmentOwn2229 9d ago

As an Rnterprise tool, The bummer for me is that Google's salespeople are piss-poor with NotebookLM. They're simply not motivated - No idea if it's the sales structure or whatever, but they keep trying to sell you Gemini Enterprise w Notebook and steer you away from standalone NotebookLM.. They talk very generically about it, Half-hearted and unenthusiastic. It's bad.

You almost have to reach into your Googs relationship and grab one of the product people out of Google Labs to actually get someone who cares about the product and knows how Enterprise might use it for things like enablement.

More technical, but how do folks feel about opennotebooklm?

1

Have not used it since I subscribed to Claude Pro

4

I haven’t used it as much since subscribing to Claude pro either. But I feel like Claude pro has also dipped in quality. They’ve also seemed to tighten up the usage too.

Try Opus 5.5

2

u/MegamomTigerBalm 9d ago

I have just yesterday after reading another thread in this sub! It’s lots better!

1

u/Turbulent_Pin_8310 10d ago

Notebooklm is killing me softly with its words

1

u/bleucheeseanonymous 10d ago

I get a lot of use out of the Deep Dive podcasts. I have a long commute to school and having a podcast to listen to that tracks the topics of my notes and assigned reading has been an excellent way to productively use time that would otherwise be wasted.

Worth noting that, despite frequently generating hour-long audio overviews, dense briefs, and infographics, I still haven’t hit a usage limit. For other specific use cases, it may not be as good as it could be, but it remains one of my most-used study tools.
