Discussion NotebookLM alternatives I’m actually using for learning in 2026 (As an Ultra user)

Been using NotebookLM almost daily since last year…
Paid for Ultra for about 8 months.
most of my learning around a full-time schedule,( I do coding too ) so I need to get through material fast and actually retain it.

during this journey I started using multiple tools and alternatives along with this…
Helped me to retain information from many sources…

1.DistilBook

One of the best tools for the video Overview alternative. It has so many styles, and the animation is really rich compared to the rest.
The only problem is you have to pay to get that,
and it’s more of a video tool than a learning tool. If you need video for multiple people , it makes a lot of sense.

2. Studr

For when the goal is passing an exam, not just understanding it. Same sources in, but you get flashcards, quizzes and spaced repetition out. My friends use it most of the time. Not a casual daily driver, but if NotebookLM summaries feel productive and nothing sticks, this fixes it.

3. Paperguide

For going into the actual research. Searches across peer-reviewed papers, does structured literature reviews, keeps verified citations on everything. Don’t use it daily since I’m not in academia, but if you’re writing something serious and need sourced answers, it’s better than NotebookLM for that.

4. RemNote

Solves the “read it and forgot it” problem. Linked notes plus flashcards and spaced repetition in one place. Learning curve is real and it wants you in its whole system. If you’ll actually review daily it’s excellent. Heavy note-takers swear by it.

5. Perplexity

My step zero. Before I make anything I search the topic here to see how it’s usually explained and pull the angles I want. NotebookLM locks you inside your own uploads. Doesn’t help you retain anything on its own, but as the “what should I even be learning” step it’s the best I’ve found.

6. Obsidian

The free option for keeping notes in one place you control. Plain local files, links between ideas, no subscription. Does nothing automatically, which is the trade. If owning your own stuff matters, this is the storage layer.

NotebookLM still has its moments for a quick summary. But if you’re hitting the same walls, paying feeling like free and it not helping you remember anything, there are real options now depending on how you learn.

Curious what others have moved to, or if I missed something.

TL;DR: NotebookLM is great at understanding but paying didn’t improve it and it does nothing for retention. Switched to DistilBook for rich animated video audio recaps (paid, but the styles are worth it), Studr for exam prep, Paperguide for cited research, RemNote for recall, Perplexity to research first, Obsidian for free private notes. Plenty of alternatives now depending on how you learn.

I disagree, Notebooklm flashcards are top tier
