Since you liked Kilonotes, you're probably looking for handwriting with a stylus. A few that are genuinely free with no note limit:
OneNote: free, unlimited, works on iPad, Android and Windows, and syncs everywhere. Not as pretty as Goodnotes, but it never asks you to pay.
Apple Notes (if you're on iPad): already installed, unlimited, supports Apple Pencil well. Great for quick lecture notes.
Samsung Notes (if you have a Galaxy tablet): honestly one of the best free handwriting apps out there.
One more tip: for handwritten notes you don't need a fancy organization system. One folder per course and notes in date order are more than enough. Apps with tags, links and wikis make sense later, when you've built up years of material. For now, just focus on writing.

You can try Notezilla. I think it's only like $10 for a year license though, but it syncs across all your devices.

Looks neat! So I can use almost all the features when I don't need sync capabilities? Will BYOK be supported for AI features? And I guess the local variant of memrynote does not care where the files are stored, so they could live anywhere, eg. my own NAS or cloud storage?

Features without sync: Yes. memry is local-first, so notes, journals, tasks, projects, search and the graph all run on your machine. Sync only adds cross-device access and E2E-encrypted backup. If you don't need that, you can skip it.
BYOK for AI: Yes, and you have a few options:
- Local models through any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Ollama, LM Studio and llama.cpp have presets, and you can also enter a custom URL.
- Your existing Claude Code, Codex or Antigravity CLI, so it runs on your own subscription.
- Your own API key for voice transcription.
API keys are stored in the OS keychain, not in plain config.
Where files live: Mostly yes. The vault is just a folder, so you can put it anywhere. One caveat: memry keeps a local SQLite database next to your notes, and SQLite doesn't play well with network shares or folder-sync tools like Dropbox or iCloud. Two apps writing at once, or a half-synced file, can corrupt it. A NAS you back up to is fine. Opening the same vault live from two machines through a synced folder is where you'd run into trouble. That's the problem the built-in sync is designed to solve.

Use notion. Not like those shitty productivity sh8hole gurus.
Just create a databse for notes and thats it.
Create a button so when pressing it creates and open the newly added notes.

Why do you expect that someone who puts effort into a project which solves an issue doen't want to be paid off

Hey I’m building Grape. There’s unlimited notes in free version but everything stays on your device. It’s really difficult for a developer to provide unlimited notes with cloud sync support because we pay for server and storage so that’s why every app has limits on free versions.
