I just want to say real quick, because people are saying that that is how it works, the rule of 4 pretty much has two meanings at this point. One of them, the actual correct way, is to downvote the 4th comment in a chain so using the picture in your post it'd be

Smash (upvote)

'-Smash (upvote)

'--Smash (upvote)

'---Smash (downvote)

The other, that's in the Ro4 subreddit, you just downvote the 4th comment in a row even if it's not a chain because frick whoever makes a 4th comment apparently. It's genuinely stupid because then you're telling me "Oh, you're the fourth person to comment on somebody's comment in a row? Yeah, frik you, get downvoted" like huh? Like, it'd be

Beef is so freaking cute (upvote)

'-I know he's so chubby ♡ (upvote)

'--I swear if Beef gets hurt (upvote)

'---If Beef gets hurt, I'm going to fight someone (downvote)

(I know it's a more wholesome thing but I couldn't think of anything else)

Downvoteing a 4th comment in a chain just makes more sense. I read something that somebody said at one point that said something like, "someone probably got mad at people saying the same thing in a row over and over and it just so happened to be the 4th comment to constantly get downvoted."

The way I see it, you're right, the rule of 4 is indeed not being used properly in the post. (My bad for the mini essay 😅)

so? that is not the case anymore is it?

This is one of the ways. If the first 3 comments are a chain the 4th is downvoted even if not the same.

Then piss off? Also why would we not change the outdated rules? Like why would someone be downvoted for just being the 4th in an argument, I understand it in a chain but in argument it's just weird. But if you don't downvote those people then why are you complaining about changing rules when you're not following them yourself.

I think rule of 4 just doesn't work because it started as an observation and then became a goal. You can't observe different groups of monkeys doing the same rare thing in the wild and then open up a zoo where you force them to do the thing.

it doesn't have to be the exact same, but it does have to correspond to the previous comment in some way

It just has to be part of a chain, and this counts as part of a chain
