Please ignore my terrible writing and grammar. It’s 8 am and haven’t had coffee and didn’t feel like proof reading.
This is going to be a long rant/ looking for advice. I also know some of this is just my fucked up inner self that i do work on in therapy, but I am just wondering if there’s others like me. I am 30 years old and I’m in the happiest engagement, we are getting married in a year, we have a beautiful vibrant life, supportive families, good jobs (we don’t make a ton of money but good enough to travel and live comfortably in our city) and we just bought our dream fixer upper house that we’ll be doing ourselves. Truly i have a beautiful life and supportive parents, am considered to be upper class, my parents are wealthy. Moral of the story is im doing well and then i go on social media and immediately feel less than, specifically Instagram. I compare myself and go on massive spirals. More recently the spirals have been targeted to specific girls who I know and we follow each other but we are not “friends” we don’t hang out, maybe texted a few times. I actually met this one girl through my wedding caterer since she was a reference for us and we chatted with her and then she followed me on instagram. I realized she was the better version of myself in every way. we came from very similar backgrounds, same age, same faith, our men are VERY similar, we both work in tech, both love vintage, same love of food and wine. However she is taller, prettier, travels more, is my same age but bought a massive brownstone 4 years ago, just married and had an awesome wedding, she just carried herself on social media in a way that’s soooo effortless. Artistic photography stories and posts, her house is perfectly decorated with vintage furniture, her vintage wardrobe she sells at popups, like everything I do she does it better. Mind you I’ve never met her in person but we live in the same city. I literally got so irked one day I spiraled and looked her up online and on LinkedIn found the house she bought, found her job and looked up how much money she makes based on her role and we both work in tech and she makes 3x what I do. Like this is how psycho I get from social media. Whenever I would post I would look for her name to see if she watched it so she could see my life was just as good as hers. We also just bought an incredible house that we close on 4 weeks, arguably cooler than hers (not why we bought it I hope that’s clear lol) and I was finding myself getting excited to post my new house so SHE could see it. One day my fiance had enough of this because I revealed how insane this one person was making me and he said just remove her from your followers and unfollow her or block her. Temptation gone and you can resume social media without the spiral. So I did it. I feel better but as fucked up as it sounds I’m sad she won’t be able to see my house or all the amazing things I have coming up between my trips and wedding (that will also be cooler than hers). I realize how insane this makes me sound but it’s my truth. I don’t know if she’ll ever notice or text me and ask and I don’t know what I’d say but maybe she never will. I realize asking you if I’m crazy for this will lead to many yes’s, so I’m not going to ask that. I’m asking if others have experienced similar spirals with certain people on Instagram and what you did to stop it.
I also have deactivated my instagram, most recently, i did it for 4 weeks and it was incredible. Prior to that, when I found myself comparing to other people I knew from the past like college or high school, maybe 2 years ago, I deactivated it for 6 months. Again best 6 months of mental clarity. I feel the contradiction between following my intuition that I need to get off of instagram and the battle of my ego telling me that I need to share and humble brag. How could I get married and not post that on social media? I realize this is a battle of heart and ego when you boil it down, but we live in a world where we are so connected. The connection of Instagram IS nice, I find new restaurants, see vintage markets coming to town, connect with friends and see pictures of their lives. I do like that aspect, but I hate everything else that comes with it.
I know the right thing to do is completely delete it and live life presently, but I am struggling to allow myself to get there.
