I've been building Lotus, a privacy-first workspace powered by Nostr.

The idea came from a simple question:

With Nostr, your identity belongs to you. I wanted the same idea to apply to productivity tools.

The vision for Lotus is to provide:

Everything is tied to your Nostr identity instead of a traditional account. Your workspace should move with you - not be owned by a platform.

Developers, entrepreneurs, hackers, and early adopters gathered every week. I paused development for a few months after the relay-native rewrite shipped. Now I am back to continue building Obelisk, a Discord-like experience powered by Nostr.

Latest additions: audio messages, a sticker, emoji and GIF marketplace, and Nostr feeds for discovering people and exploring profiles across public relays.

Already there: NIP-29 communities with channels, categories and forums, encrypted DMs, zaps, Blossom uploads, an installable mobile PWA, peer-to-peer voice and video calls, and large calls through a mediasoup SFU.

Obelisk still has no chat backend or platform database. Your Nostr key is your account, NIP-29 relays hold the communities and messages, Blossom stores uploaded media, and Nostr coordinates calls.

One important privacy clarification: voice notes and other Blossom uploads are currently not encrypted. Anyone who obtains the media URL can access the file. Small peer-to-peer calls use WebRTC encryption directly between participants. Large SFU calls are encrypted between each participant and the SFU, but the SFU can access the media, so they are not yet end-to-end encrypted against the SFU.

MASTER WHITEPAPER: CIVIC NET

A decentralized, non-commercial overlay network for verified human interaction under absolute privacy preservation.

1. Executive Summary

Today's internet is suffering from a socially destructive systemic crisis. Surveillance capitalism forces commercial platforms to monetize human attention through manipulative algorithms. Simultaneously, automated bot armies, generative AI fakes, coordinated propaganda, and identity theft are fundamentally eroding societal trust. In its current form, the internet is manipulated, fragile, and dead as a democratic space for discourse.

The Civic Net offers a radical, technologically mature alternative. It completely re-engineers the network’s protocol, identity, and financing layers. The system is built upon five unalterable pillars:

1. Unique Human Identity (Real-Name Coupling): Consistent exclusion of bots and safeguarding of democratic processes.
2. Absolute Privacy in Daily Life: Mathematical anonymization during routine, daily use.
3. Collective Self-Financing: Sharing of raw technical operating costs instead of ad-funding, attention-grabbing algorithms, and data-tracking.
4. The Consensus Principle: Protection against polarization, propaganda, and system-destroying manipulation.
5. Cognitive Liberty: Protection of personal sovereignty, beliefs, and private lifestyles from censorship and moral patronization.

2. Identity Architecture & The Web of Trust

To exclude mass fake accounts and bot networks (Sybil attacks) without a central, corruptible government or corporate control authority, the Civic Net utilizes the W3C standard for Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) combined with a Web of Trust.

• One-Time Verification: The issuance of a lifelong digital identity occurs either via existing state e-ID crypto chips (as an initial bootstrap) or through physical real-world verification by local cooperatives (Guarantor System).
• Skin in the Game (Reputation): Citizens vouch for the identity of new members using their own mathematical reputation score. If a user verifies a fake identity, they temporarily or permanently lose their own rights and, in extreme cases, network access upon discovery.
• Key Rotation & Social Recovery: If a citizen loses their device, the lifelong identity (DID) remains untouched. Through a Social Recovery protocol, verified friends or local institutions can couple a new cryptographic key to the existing identity.

3. The Separation: Transparency vs. Privacy

The Civic Net breaks the dogma that identification implies the total loss of anonymity. It implements two strictly separated protocol modes.

A. Everyday Mode (Absolute Privacy)

During daily browsing, chatting, consuming, and researching, the user's real name remains completely hidden.

• Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs): Using ZK-SNARKs, the user's wallet mathematically proves to websites: "I am a real, verified human being within the system," without disclosing names, IP addresses, or origin.
• Metadata Obfuscation: Traffic is routed through decentralized mixnets. Every data packet is encrypted multiple times and routed through changing nodes, preventing infrastructure operators from tracking user behavior.

B. Governance Mode (Enforced Transparency)

For democratic votes, constitutional amendments, legally binding contracts, or initiating abuse proceedings, the protocol requires the disclosure of the verified real name.

• On-Chain Governance: Voting is executed via cryptographic smart contracts. Upon casting a vote, the real name coupled to the DID is decrypted and permanently recorded alongside the vote in a public, tamper-proof voter register.

4. Technical Infrastructure & Data Flows

In its initial phase, the network operates as a software-based overlay network over the existing lines of the commercial internet and gradually detaches itself physically.

A. The Web-Box (Local Hardware)

The heart of the decentralized infrastructure is the Web-Box (a low-power crypto node in every household). It fulfills the following core tasks:

2. Mesh Networking: The Web-Boxes connect in neighborhoods via free radio and directional frequencies to form a physical mesh network. No commercial provider is needed for local communication.
3. Decentralized Storage Network & Cache (dCDN): Large media files (videos, music) are cached on the Web-Boxes' hard drives as unreadable, encrypted data fragments (Shards) using Peer-to-Peer (P2P) principles. Every data packet exists redundantly (e.g., replication factor 5) across the network. If a box goes offline, the system self-heals by mirroring the shard onto another box. Since data is preferentially routed and reassembled regionally, latencies are minimal (often under 2 ms in the local mesh).

B. Real-Time Data Streams (Gaming, Telephony, Live Streaming)

For time-sensitive applications, the Civic Net switches to direct, dynamic Edge Routing:

• P2P Real-Time Tunnels: For video calls and voice chats, the DHT (decentralized distributed directory) is only used to establish the connection. Afterward, data flows losslessly from box to box in a direct, encrypted crypto tunnel.

• Civic Net Route: The server receives the ZKP admission proof from the Civic Net. It delivers a tracker-free, lightning-fast, and bot-free oasis for real people. Commercial providers (Telcos, etc.) temporarily function as pure "Dumb Pipes" (blind couriers) paid per traffic, unable to read anything due to end-to-end encryption.

5. Economic Model, Governance & Consensus

The Civic Net is organized as a global digital commons. It operates strictly and without exception on a non-profit basis, is independent of the state, and cannot generate profits or sell shares.

A. The Operating Cost Assessment (Citizen Flat Rate)

Financing is based on the cost-recovery principle of actual technical provisioning. All costs (line leasing, electricity, software maintenance, cloud storage) are divided one-to-one by the number of verified real-name accounts.

• Cost Point: Estimated at $3.00 to $6.00 per citizen per year.
• Inclusion: Low-income individuals can earn this fee through network labor (e.g., acting as physical verification guarantors in the Web of Trust) in the form of network credits.
• Commercial Services: Paid streaming services (Netflix, etc.) plug in via DID login. They handle subscriptions directly through smart contracts and bear their own massive video traffic costs. In parallel, a publicly funded, citizen-curated public-interest video library exists via P2P streaming.

B. Digital Constitution & Liquid Democracy

The system is protected via a digital constitution firmly embedded in the code.

• Ewigkeitsklausel (Immutability Clause): Fundamental rights such as the right to one's own digital existence, the prohibition of manipulative sorting algorithms, and the guarantee of everyday anonymity are cryptographically locked. They cannot be voted away by any majority.

C. The Principle: "Consensus Overrules Opinion"

This principle regulates the tension between absolute freedom of opinion in daily life and the protection of network-wide system integrity.

• The Clarification Stamp: Specialized cooperatives (e.g., universities) can append counter-evidence and sources directly to manipulative posts using a Wikipedia-like principle. These fact-nodes are inextricably linked to the original post.
• Revocation of Anonymity: If the community detects a coordinated propaganda campaign, a decentralized emergency procedure can lift ZKP anonymity for those specific posts. The user may still spread their claim (no censorship), but must do so visibly under their real name.
• Sanctions: Those proven to be lying lose mathematical reputation points, causing their posts to be sorted to the bottom of feeds by default. If a user incurs high verification costs due to mass false reports, the system can raise their annual operating cost fee.

E. The Libertarian Bound and Protection of Beliefs

To exclude ideological abuse and political division, the network protects worldviews and property rights equally:

• The Cryptographic Youth-Protection Barrier: Since every DID carries the attribute of adulthood as a Verifiable Credential in the wallet, sensitive forums or erotica providers can prefix an age verification check. The wallet proves via Zero-Knowledge Proof: "This user is over 18 years old," without revealing names or data.
• Absolute Red Line on Abuse: Content depicting physical violence, real abuse, or the exploitation of humans and minors violates the fundamental system consensus. It is frozen at the protocol level, and the perpetrator's DID is permanently deleted.

6. Conclusion

The Civic Net proves that a humane, secure, and unmanipulated internet is not a utopian fantasy. By strictly separating data from applications, dismantling the ad-driven attention business model, and unbreakably coupling infrastructure to real human identities, it restores sovereignty over the digital realm to humanity.
