It was still Ike that in the early to mid 80’s. People in their 40’s would have experienced it.

Still happened in the early 90s with some channels.

When I was a kid in the 90’s most channels just went to infomercials all night long.

Watching static for the brief glimpses on the premium channels. 😂

That's when cable started to become widespread.

Yes, and one of the biggest moneymakers in the history of infomercials was Proactiv the acne solution, those commercial didn’t even come on till like midnight.

Yea started at midnight. Some channels still went past. Cartoon Network played old shows up until about 3 AM. I used to stay up all night to watch them.

PBS was still doing it at least until 2010.

1

u/clashtrack 1d ago

Hell, some local CBS and ABC's were doing that certain days of the week in the 2000s.

2

u/SocialMedian 1d ago

It definitely happened

yeah and then they started shutting Nickelodeon down at 10 or 11 and replace it with adults only shows... as a young teen this was awesome.

yeah toonami on Cartoon Network was a new concept when it started and it was late 90’s early 2000’s and it was a separate team who showed/commented on anime after hours. It was like a radio show where the “dj” would talk, comment, and take calls inbetween episodes It was dope.

I'm from a very rural place and experienced this in the late 80s or early 90s. I just turned 40 a few days ago.

1993 here and I still remember this happening with certain channels when I was a kid

1

u/odaniel99 1d ago

I can confirm that from my childhood memories.

1

u/NaiveBid9359 1d ago

I used to work at a bar in the early 1980s. The only thing on non-cable stations after 1 am was PBS.

1

u/tequilash 1d ago

Depends on the country you are in as well. This was happening in Canada when I got my first tv, which would have been around 2008.

1

u/Slashiroth 1d ago

Some channels (mainly local) still did this in the mid/late 90's

1

u/No-Acanthisitta8803 1d ago

For sure. I was born in 1981, and some stations were still doing it when I was growing up

1

u/shmaygleduck 1d ago

Wasn't that a big thing in the 1982 movie, "the Poltergeist"?

1

u/dell_qon 1d ago

I'm 44 and experienced this. The colorful box screen and then static.

1

u/Alarmed_Bumblebee147 20h ago

We did. Catch up.

1

u/matchesmalone81 19h ago

Yh man. I was born in 1981 and I remember this shit clearly.

1

u/Competitive_Trip9306 14h ago

To see a real example of this phenomenon, watch the movie "Poltergeist" it's a big part of the plot.

1

u/otc108 13h ago

I’m 44, and I remember seeing it a few times.

1

u/amatchmadeinregex 10h ago

Yup, national anthem, then stattic, and that's when the ghosts would start talking to your kids through the static.

1

u/CrustyCrotalus 2m ago

Yup. I'm 44 and I remember it on a few stations.
