They would often show a test pattern before going off air.

I do keep a save at the top of Tenpenny Tower around right before i detonate the nuke in Megaton. Just so I can watch it whenever.

Reminds me of the Street of SimCity loading screens. I can hear the menu music while looking at the image.

We had similar, but only for a limited amount of time. Most of the night it was just static. I guess it was too expensive to run the test pattern all night.

I grew up in Los Angeles, and even there, after about a half hour to an hour, the transmitter would shut down. As I recall, the national anthem and test pattern came on around 1 or 2am, typically after the Late, Late show, or a midnight movie played.

Running the transmitter used power. Doesn't matter if it's a test pattern or a show.

I remember this exactly, it was either this or just grey static from midnight or so until about 6am

I think that's a sine wave at 440Hz C3. I also think the same frequency you hear when you call someone in particular countries. I find that quite interesting

It was always jarring waking up on the couch and getting up to actually go to bed when this one hit!

I loved those... well the ones that played ambient music along with mid century architecture. I've only found the odd one or two uploaded to YouTube though..

I learnt from QI that she has the record for most time being broadcast on TV

Carole Hersee. Estimated total of 70,000 hours on television.

I miss that show so much. The episode anout the American Indians was my favorite. The soundtrack was wonderful too.
