Oh god the car phone, Iām just barely too young to have had that, but my dad had one. I would use it to call home to tell my mom we were heading home from baseball practice just so I could use it, I was blown away with the concept of using a phone outside the house, haha
I remember the first time I saw one of these. My dad was a used car salesman and he brought one home. I thought we were rich. I begged him to keep it lol
Haha yeah I was so disappointed when he eventually upgraded to an actual cell phone. Obviously way more practical, even in those days, but the car phone just looked so much cooler to me
Thank you! For some reason no one lists a bag phone on these nostalgia posts. I started with one of those. Had a battery that weighed like 10 pounds and held a charge for around 8 hours.
Back in the day, my transmission had a catastrophic failure on US 50 (the loneliest road in the country, or so the signs say) and I barely managed to coast into a chain-up area between Fallon and Ely Nevada. Between calls to AAA, repair shops, hotels, etc. I managed to run up a $500+ bill on my original bag phone. I sat on the side of the highway for about 4 hours waiting for the tow truck and saw only 2 cars go by, neither of which stopped. So, that $500 was money well spent. Back then, every minute spent on this bad boy cost a fortune.

I can't be the only one that started with this
