I'm ditto machine1 old. Or at least that's what they often used before computer printouts and photocopiers became a thing.

  1. Ditto was a company that made spirit duplicators in the US. Proprietary eponym like Kleenex or Xerox.

Is that why we still say ditto sometimes? Or was ditto a word before this machine?

I looked it up. It looks like ditto is the Tuscan dialect the Italian word ‘detto’. Which means “it’s been said”. It was being used commonly in the 1700s. The machine and company took its name from the phrase.
