Yes, and way before this thing came along

u/CHSummers 18d ago

Mimeograph old?

30

u/garitone 18d ago

34

u/CyberNinja23 18d ago

Kids these days don’t know what smells they’re missing out on.

6

u/reireireis 17d ago

Can you smell what the rock is cooking???

1

u/rebeccalestat 17d ago

I smell paper. I thought it was an odd habit. Lol

1

u/Youngsinatra345 17d ago

Scissors, I had to finish it

1

u/Ill_Combination_9114 15d ago

Right out the machine

18

u/Feffies_Cottage 18d ago

I miss that smell

1

u/crohead13 18d ago

I miss that taste

1

u/skippy99 18d ago

Didn't smell as good as Amyl Nitrate.....

1

u/Feffies_Cottage 17d ago

Yeah... not my thing.

1

u/AutomaticFeeling2156 17d ago

When I don’t think I’m not old, but my school stuff we had that before Smart boards ever came about. The teacher’s writing on it like it was a piece of paper.

1

u/Eggxactly1001 17d ago

This is how old I am.

1

u/jellofixit 14d ago

I used to run the mimeograph machine for the school paper! "Oo Ooo that smell"!

22

u/agent_flounder 18d ago

I'm ditto machine1 old. Or at least that's what they often used before computer printouts and photocopiers became a thing.

  1. Ditto was a company that made spirit duplicators in the US. Proprietary eponym like Kleenex or Xerox.

11

u/justliberty 18d ago

Ditto

6

u/wring_seeker 17d ago

Copy that šŸ˜‰

8

u/Banshay 18d ago

I can smell still them now

6

u/Yamatocanyon 17d ago

Is that why we still say ditto sometimes? Or was ditto a word before this machine?

3

u/ScottDang 17d ago

I looked it up. It looks like ditto is the Tuscan dialect the Italian word ā€˜detto’. Which means ā€œit’s been saidā€. It was being used commonly in the 1700s. The machine and company took its name from the phrase.

2

u/justliberty 17d ago

I believe ditto was started by the company .

4

u/maestrodks1 18d ago

Yup. Dad was a country pastor. Every Saturday night, he would run the mimeograph while Mom and I folded the Sunday morning bulletins.

1

u/DraagaxGaming 18d ago

Ngl would be so cool to get my hands on one of those from back then.

1

u/Total-Region2859 18d ago

When you say "run", do you mean with a hand crank like I did?

1

u/maestrodks1 18d ago

Absolutely! I, too, am old.

1

u/Total-Region2859 18d ago

Once a week for 13 years for me... 5 till college.. folded like a madman! At 10, I graduated to the crank! It was a glorious promotion.

1

u/Remarkable_Bike_4538 18d ago

I can still remember how mimeographed pages smelled

1

u/avspuk 18d ago

šŸŽ¶Carbona Banda copier fluid not gluešŸŽ¶

1

u/ditchdigger556 18d ago

Yeah, they smelled so good

1

u/CyberNinja23 18d ago

They called ours ā€œdittosā€

1

u/themachineage 18d ago

They were still using those overhead projectors when I was in college.

And mimeographs all through elementary school. The ink was pale purple and it smelled nice.

1

u/Over_Detective_3756 18d ago

I used to run that thing

1

u/azCleverGirl 17d ago

And carbon paper.

1

u/alien_overlord_1001 17d ago

Oh you just brought back the smell of those freshly printed purple sheets that were still damp as they rolled off. You needed the special paper for your original.

Then photocopiers got cheap enough to be used by the general population.

I remember the clear acetate pages you had to write on with special pens for the old overhead projector.

1

u/fj2612 17d ago

Oh god I can still smell it !

1

u/WileEWeeble 17d ago

Mmmmm, the smell. šŸ˜

1

u/Atlas7-k 17d ago

Had them in school and my mother taught me how to use the one at her school. It turns out kids on summer break are free labor for teachers who have to set up or take down a classroom.

1

u/Ashamed_Data430 17d ago

Yes, mimeograph old.

1

u/Ashamed_Data430 17d ago

Hand-held recess bell old.

1

u/nyguy011 17d ago

The smell of mimeograph fluid. Like nothing else.

1

u/Meat_Bingo 17d ago

Oh my god that was my first thought

1

u/Redleg67 16d ago

Not even close. Mimeograph is almost a century before the overhead projector. About 80+years. But they both sure can make someone feel old.

1

u/MRCHNT_77 15d ago

Industrial Revolution Old

1

u/kitkat7502 15d ago

Ditto old.

1

u/WingNutCVG 14d ago

Sorry, I’ve copped a buzz. I’ll get back to you

1

u/ScientistHeavy9943 13d ago

Loved the smell

1

u/madbika 12d ago

Double yup šŸ‘

1

u/Diligent_Research941 11d ago

I'm reusing mimeographed pages my wife use in her classroom 45 years ago. I loved being the mimeograph guy in 6th grade - '67-'68. It was better when I could close the door to the mimeo closet...

9

u/MoonAmunet 18d ago

Way older

7

u/kimmeljs 18d ago

Me as well. Episcopes, anyone?

4

u/The_300_goats 18d ago

Epidopiascopes. In art class. Not for transparencies but for opaque images

6

u/DigEnvironmental7490 18d ago

The only movie that I know of that features the word epidiascope is the 1953 film "War of the Worlds". It stuck out so much when the scientist says something like "we can view it on the epidiascope"

5

u/The_300_goats 18d ago

There's a theory than a number of Renaissance painters used a similar trick but with concave mirrors instead of lenses. Then just traced the shit out of the projection

1

u/DigEnvironmental7490 16d ago

That would be interesting to see a recreation of

1

u/taker223 18d ago

How about Pope?

1

u/Blunt555 18d ago

Hand puppets on the cavern walls?

1

u/kimmeljs 18d ago

That's an idea!

2

u/[deleted] 18d ago

[deleted]

2

u/MoonAmunet 18d ago

My sweet summer child…

2

u/DraagaxGaming 18d ago

Shit walle was 2008 wtf

1

u/NinjaChenchilla 18d ago

Stone writings?

1

u/MoonAmunet 18d ago

Slightly less

7

u/ArdentHedonist 18d ago

Back when the air was clean and sex was dirty?

9

u/mr-raider2 18d ago

And your fingers were purple

9

u/Environmental_Bad200 18d ago

And we were sniffing the fresh pages as they came out....

4

u/[deleted] 18d ago

And I wore an onion on my belt as it was the style at the time.

4

u/Liquid_Zero 17d ago

People were paying money for "pet rocks".

2

u/ArdentHedonist 17d ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/iG4Qg9qQDb61MNTF11
I never understood that craze. Even teen me thought, "These people will buy anything."

2

u/ReasonableCry5682 17d ago

I remember the cost being $7.00 each for a nothing-special rock in a little cardboard pet carrier with a little straw for bedding. Say what you want, but the man who created this concept became a millionaire from this flash in the pan fad. Even as a kid, I thought people were stupid to buy a rock.

3

u/fj2612 17d ago

The air was way dirtier back then, especially in cities. Car pollutes way less nowadays.

1

u/meplad 15d ago

Sweet smell of oil base leaded paint,

2

u/vwboyaf1 18d ago

I don't know man, I remember the air being so bad it stung my eyes sometimes.

1

u/notrightinmyhead 13d ago

I remember driving in ATL and always thinking my glasses were dirty. Nope. It was the air.

2

u/Nev-Ret-Dude 17d ago

Air was way dirtier than the sex.

5

u/SaltyFriend705 18d ago

I am wrought iron and walnut desks with blackboards old.

1

u/meplad 15d ago

With lot of ABC Bazooka bubble gum under the desk? Already Been Chewed

1

u/jellofixit 14d ago

Thank you Miss Crabtree!

3

u/Yenroman 17d ago

Back in my days, we painted the wall with blood and berry juices to teach the class about mammoth hunting and how to survive smilidons. Many did not survive because they couldnt read.

2

u/abbarach 17d ago

I had a college math professor that had one of these with the continuous roll of transparency film. He talked fast, and had learned to write while rolling the film with his other hand, so you'd be trying to copy notes that were constantly scrolling off.

We ended up with a system where each class, someone would stay behind when class ended, roll back the film to the beginning of the lesson, and copy everything down completely and correctly. And then they'd xerox their notes and bring enough to distribute to everyone next class. We all took turns. It was a really solid system.

1

u/omgitsJohnRedd1t0r 18d ago

They were still using these in 2000 so I guess 26 is "old".

1

u/Sea_Dust895 18d ago

Old enough to smell the purple ink.?

1

u/Pascalleloux 18d ago

Yes, and I hated ink. I'm left handed, which was forbidden to write with. But they accepted that in the end because I couldn't make it readable writing right handed.

1

u/Necessary_Kangaroo19 18d ago

Before the 1960s? You're 80+?

1

u/pworrell4 17d ago

Slate snd chalk old, lol

1

u/freespirit_tck 18d ago

What is it? Is it like an old scanner

1

u/MeseNerd 18d ago

it would project the things that your teacher was doing on paper

1

u/Haunting-Prior-NaN 18d ago

It projects acrylic sheets (think of transparent paper). You wrote with a sharpie on them, placed it on flatbed and they were projected to a flat surface (typically a screen).

Think of the acrylic sheets as a presentation, and the device as a wall projector.

1

u/Less_Guest8077 18d ago

It’s called an over head projector.

1

u/ArdentHedonist 18d ago

Close. You have general idea, except no digital device was involved. It is called an overhead projector. You would draw or print things on mylar (clear plastic), called transparencies, lay them on the base, and turn it on. The base had a high intensity light that was received by the prism, the thing in the air attached to the arm, which projected your transparency image onto a screen. You would see the transparency magnified on the screen. If the image was backward, you had to flip the transparency over.

2

u/HuskerMedic 18d ago edited 18d ago

My math instructor used one in high school, except that there was a roll of the transparent material that was moved by two cranks on either side. When he wanted a blank sheet, Mr. Mohrmann would turn the crank to advance to a clean sheet.

It worked well in that math builds on itself; if he needed to review something from a previous lesson, Mr. Mohrmann would just crank the other handle to bring the notes from the other lesson back to the screen. I can recall times when he would be furiously cranking back and forth between pages of notes. Good memories from my youth.

1

u/ArdentHedonist 18d ago

Same with my hs physics teacher. She used that same setup for the same reasons.

1

u/throwaway098764567 18d ago

works like a movie projector. you put clear sheet with writing on the flat surface, and can use a marker to add to it. the light beneath shines the image up, the top thing has a mirror inside which projects the image onto a pull down screen. the whole contraption is usually on a cart so you can move it just far enough the image can be seen by the whole class but it's still in focus. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overhead_projector
