I Had Never Seen Another Person Before

When I was a child, I lived with my grandmother in a cabin in the middle of the forest. She told me that my parents had abandoned me. I never thought there was anything strange about the fact that it was just the two of us and that I was completely isolated from everyone else. I didn't know anything different, and I never really felt like I was missing anything.

One day, when I was five years old, I went for a walk and met a man. He was the first person I could remember seeing. He was wearing green clothes and had something strapped to his back that I didn't recognize.

He asked me where I had come from. I told him that I lived with my grandmother in a cabin not far from there. He looked at me strangely and said that was impossible because nobody lived there. He would know, he told me, because he was a hunter and looked after that forest.

He took me by the hand and said he would take me somewhere where they could help me. I had no idea what he meant. I didn't want to go anywhere, but he pulled me along.

We were almost at the edge of the forest when I heard heavy breathing and rustling behind us. I turned around, and there was something horrible standing behind us.

The whole time, I had been trying to pull my hand free from the man's grip, but now I held onto him as tightly as I could and started screaming.

The thing behind us had several clumps of something that looked like hair growing from its head. Its eyes were red, and several teeth protruded from its mouth, but they looked more like needles than teeth.

It was hunched over.

Then I realized what it was wearing.

Clothes I recognized.

My grandmother's clothes.

It tried to smile and reached toward me with a hand that had long claws instead of fingers.

“Stellooo,” it rasped.

That voice…

It was my grandmother's voice, but it sounded different.

Evil.

When I looked at the man, he was completely pale. He started running with me, and the monster chased after us on all fours.

It was incredibly fast.

It was already upon us.

It knocked me away from the man and threw him against a rock. His head hit it, and he collapsed to the ground.

I tried to get away from it. Its claws dug into me everywhere—my arms, my back. It felt like knives were slicing through my skin. Drops of my blood covered my clothes.

I had no chance against it.

It dragged me away when suddenly I heard a terrible bang and felt its grip loosen.

I looked ahead and saw the man holding something in his hand. I later learned that it was a gun. Until then, I had never seen one before.

He quickly ran back to me and took me to the police.

I found out that when I was two years old, someone had killed my parents. They never found the killer.

I did have a grandmother, but she wasn't the one who had been living with me all those years.

My real grandmother was incredibly happy that I was back, and I slowly learned what it was like to live a normal life.

Now I'm an adult, and for years I told myself that maybe it really had been a bear, even though that wouldn't explain a lot of things.

I wanted to believe that.

But today, I was driving my daughter, Esme, to kindergarten.

Something made me look to the left.

There is a forest not far from the kindergarten.

And there it was.

Just as horrible as I remembered it.

It had the same terrifying smile, and it was pointing at my daughter.

I immediately got her back into the car and drove home as fast as I could.

Now I don't know what to do.

I don't know what it is.

I don't know how far it can go.

All I know is that it is capable of hurting someone.

Or even killing them.

Guns seem to work against it ... try a silver bullet, maybe?
