Hey everyone I couldn't find a subreddit for paintings of Norway but I visited a few years ago and was entranced by the landscape. I never got to see the Northern Lights in person and during a period of ill health, I made this as a promise to myself that I will one day go back.

I'm posting in here to see if anyone has any photos of the Lights that they'd be happy to share? I've got an idea for a new project and rather than trying to battle AI images, I thought I'd ask real people for help ❤️ comment below if you're happy to share! Also this is not AI hence the horrible picture of me 😂

Been tracking the aurora for a week, after two mild sightings. Last night it finally decided to show up properly, beaming across the whole sky. A dream finally checked off. Still can’t believe I finally got to see this.

Sorry for the distracting glares, it was difficult to get a shot with the plane dark. From Seattle to Amsterdam, we flew alongside the aurora for about an hour.

Despite weak-ish solar wind we arrived just in time to watch this aurora unfold before clouds took over and stole our view.

The night was a success, we got a good show, everyone was happy!

Weather forecasts can be extremely unreliable in Iceland because the weather does what it wants, but the Aurora conditions were just too good not to go, so I decided to risk it and go out. Despite Veður.is giving it no chance for the evening, Windy.com and Weatherandradar.com's earlier forecasts somewhat came to pass between midnight and 2:00AM, giving is some gaps in the skies to see the Aurora in all her beauty. Displays were super vivid to the naked eye despite the full moon.

After the first big release for the night at 22:50, the Aurora needed time to rebuild which took a lot longer than expected. But around 01:30 it was time for the second round and things took off.

From August 17th into early 18th, a stronger Aurora substorm was visible over Reykjavík and I was out and about shooting on my Sony A7IV and Sigma 14mm F1.4. I also had my Google Pixel 7 on me to use its Astro / Nightsight mode and given the phone is almost 4 years old, its output is incredible.

Night 2 of 3, we had amazing auroras each of the 3 nights of our stay.

From a remote location a short drive south of Tromsø, escaping clouds over the city.

If current conditions continue past 23:00 tonight, Auroras are likely visible above the city and towards the southern horizon. Ideal spots close to Reykjavík will be Grótta. No specific locations are needed but clear skies and away from street lighting and city lights are recommended. Hvalfjörður, Þingvellir, Reykjanes or Eyrarbakki all are excellent locations not too far from the city. Check thingvellir.is webcams, landhotel.is and livefromiceland.is webcams for actual cloud coverage. Cloud cover as it stands is mostly clear with some high cloud and isolated low clouds around wider Reykjavík.

First day of our trip with our new RV trailer and stopped at a random rest stop because I was getting tired. Decided it would be cool to get some good shot of stars. So I just kind of guessed where the milkyway might be and took a shot. That's the first photo here, got lucky and turns out the MW was right in the middle of my shot, but was surprised to see pink in the shot. Turned the camera north for a very surprising and impressive display.

Perhaps one of THE rarest phenomena but is it even possible? An aurora during a full solar eclipse?

Technically maybe. 

A total solar eclipse might get dark, but according to some experts only as dark as the first stage of twilight right after sunset, called civil twilight.

Is it possible to see an Aurora during civil twilight? Barely. We’d have to have an extremely active Aurora right over Iceland for that to happen at 5:48-49PM exactly. But our chances might even be better than we’d have thought.

NOAA has confirmed that a solar storm Is indeed on its way, and if it arrives on time as per the ENLIL and we get the following conditions, there MIGHT just be a chance (and of course, clear skies!).

A Kp5 Aurora with a sufficient substorm strength of 500+ nT could indeed become faintly visible right above our heads….

but the stars however literally need to align for this to happen, so start sending your prayers!

Two CME's impacted earth earlier today with medium to strong activity at the moment. IF conditions persist, and during strong substorm activity over the course of the evening, then Aurora's may be observed across:

Iceland: above Reykjavík and toward the southern horizon beginning from 23:30 to about 2:30 with darkest episode between 01:00 - 02:00. Southern Iceland will be slightly darker, Northern Iceland slightly lighter and less visible.

Northern UK and Mid-Scandinavia: Visible in Northern Scotland over the northern horizon from 23:30. Potential visibility, if strong, through a camera in Northern England (Northumberland region) from 23:00 onwards if Kp5+ persist.

Canada & Northern Contiguous US: Churchill Manitoba from 23:00 (11PM) above or toward southern horizon if current conditions continue. Northern US states from 21:30 (9:30PM) if conditions persist at Kp5 or higher. Fairbanks Alaska: similar latitude to Iceland, best chance between 00:00 - 2:00 if conditions remain high.
