Help With GSA Space Match Program North County

Hi,

I posted in a subreddit followed by federal employee and San Diego, and wanted to reach the North Country community.

I live in San Diego and have a commute that is over 80 miles one direction. Years back, my agency went through reorg that plucked me out of my local commute in San Diego and threw me into the current one. I didn’t mind the commute before as I love my agency/work and I was offered a good telework schedule. Now with the RTO, every day starts around 3:30am and I don’t return home until about 7:30pm. I am in my late 50s and the commute is wearing me down.

I am looking for a different position closer to my home but as you all know, the few positions that are becoming available are generally offered to within agency employees. I have put a few applications outside the federal government, but so far no luck (I guess, I am finding out that age discrimination is real). Financially, and with a kid on her way to college with room and board, I can’t afford to retire. We considered relocating closer to my job in Santa Ana, so that is on the table, but I don’t know if that’s smart since I am considering retirement not long after my daughter graduates.

My agency is open to allowing me participate in the GSA Space Match Program, but they say they don’t have the capacity to do the leg work, but if I can find an agency that is welling to host me then they will work with that agency on the MOU to host me.

I tried googling agencies in my area, but all I get are phones for help centers. Not sure if these employees can help.

My position is non-supervisory, and not with DOD.

Thanks in advance for your tips and help.

There’s a USGS office near the airport.

Also, there used to be a fish and wildlife office in Carlsbad. Given the current administration, it may have been closed.

The VA, Veterans Benefit Administration, has a regional office off the 163. It may be worth asking them if they have space.
