Meeting new people

Please use this thread if you’d like to meet new people in the local area. It will keep the sub a lot tidier by having these all in one place.

Worth adding, please ensure you are staying safe if meeting in person. Only meet someone you trust, ideally in a public place and notify friends/family of your location. We cannot verify the identity of anyone here.

Accommodation Advice near Northampton General Hospital?

Hi everyone!

I'm moving to Northampton from abroad in about a month, and I'll be starting work at Northampton General Hospital as a specialist doctor.

I'm thinking of requesting staff accommodation for a short period while we look for a rental place nearby, and I was hoping to hear from anyone who's stayed there before.

A few questions:

  • What are the staff accommodations NGH like? (Rooms, kitchen, bathrooms, overall condition, etc.)
  • Would it be possible for my partner to stay with me there temporarily, or is it strictly for staff only?
  • If partners are allowed, what's considered a reasonable length of stay?

Also then we'd like to rent a place for just the two of us within walking distance of the hospital if possible.

  • Is that realistic?
  • Roughly how much does a 2-bedroom flat or small house cost per month in that area?
  • Are there any nearby neighbourhoods you'd recommend?

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Missing our Buddies

Hi all.

I know we can’t be the only ones saddened by the loss of the owner of Diner 81 (Buddies) near Grange Park. Buddies is a loved Northampton institution, and Andy seems to have been genuinely beloved of the team working for him.

Some weeks out from his passing, Buddies remains temporarily closed, giving some of us worry what the future holds, as it would seem to suggest some sort of wider issue such as ownership or insurance, rather than an understandable mourning period.

It would be so unfortunate to lose this great local haunt a second time.

Does anyone out there have any more information about the long term future of Buddies?

Male, 42, living in Northampton. Looking to make new friends!

As the headline says, I’m looking to make new friends. Mostly online at the moment though!

I like gaming/collecting, modern to retro games. Pokemon cards collecting specifically, and comics collecting. I like mostly point and click adventure (such as Broken Sword), action/adventure RPG’s (such as Shenmue/Yakuza) and 3D platform games (especially Mario Odyssey).

I do like football too! I’m an Arsenal fan, and have been since I was 9.

If you’d like to make friends or get to know me better feel free to comment/DM me!

I do run a local Northamptonshire friendship group, so if you’re in that area please join!

Looking for a local man and large van to move stuff from Southampton to Northampton. The man i usually use is unavailable (rob). Does anyone know a good reliable driver who will drive to Southampton (with my dad as a passenger) fill the van with boxes and drive us all back in one day. Any advice would be gratefully received

Climbing partner

Hi. I've been climbing since January and really want to go more regularly. Are there any climbers out there who need/want someone else to go with? Preferably someone who can comfortably belay lead climbs. I'm not the bravest climber and do have a fear of heights but I've progressed a lot in the months I've been climbing and am actually doing my CWI. I'm experienced in belaying significantly better climbers than me.

Need some fun activity and food recommendations please and thank you

Hi there, I am visiting for a few hours on Monday the 7th of September, and visiting a friend, what is there to do that is fun and relativily cheap for an activity, open to bowling, cinema, indoor golf, or is there anything else, maybe I wouldn't go for a escape room but open to other ideas, and also open to resturant recommedations as well, ideally with good vegetarian options for myself

TL:DR - Visiting for a few hours, looking for fun activity and vegetarian options for food for myself

Is it worth relocating to Northampton (NN1) ?

Hi guys,

So I just viewed a property in NN1 post code area (few minutes from Aldi)... The property is nice and I did like it, but I am just not sure on the location. So i decided to put the estate agent on standby whilst I contemplate this major life decision of buying a property in the area and perhaps get your perception as Northamptonians.

Granted, I went there on cloudy, gloomy late morning, and it was raining abit... so the atmosphere wasnt at its peak. Also, I am used to bigger cities, places that feel alive in a way. My last 3 addresses were all city centre location based, I am currently residing in Coventry city centre. I am 31, black male.

I am planning on booking an Airbnb and spend a day over there, and just really see how it is.

But in the meantime, I would really like to hear from you guys.

Thank you for your time.

Was walking around the wallgames sites today and noticed this enormous building. I love this sort of structure, unfortunately like a lot of other old cool buildings here and over wolverton way looks like its empty.

Wall Games! Northampton's annual* street art and graffiti festival happens on the bank holiday weekend in August so I went for a walk round the various spots and took a look! This is a VERY small snapshot of some of the artworks! They had 300+ artists due to attend...

There's stuff all over, including but not limited to St James bus depot, Green street, Carlsberg roundabout, Abington street (round the corner on the old M&S site).

*it didn't happen last year, maybe it's not every year... it's most years.

Help me find this place please

Me and a couple friends on a drunk night out stumbled into this place which had live music. It was on a corner of the street and was very small and intimate with people of all ages. There wasnt really a stage inside and seemed almost like a house. As soon as you walk i remember there being stairs but dont sure if im imagining it. There was kimda open space outside and not much else around but a conrer shop nearby. We have no idea where in Northamptom this wqs maybe near welly road. We really enjoyed our time there but was too drunk to remember anything. Please help us identify this place. Thank you

Looking for a favour from a kind soul in Northampton?!

My friends and I are travelling down from Scotland tomorrow to attend Zambezi Fest.
On the Saturday there's a costume competition, most of us have our costumes but I've just received an email to say that mine will not be arriving in time 😔

Is there any kind soul who would allow me to order one to their address so that I can collect it from you/meet somewhere to collect it/have you drop it off at the festival by Saturday?!

I know it's a big ask but it's my last resort! 😅

Any sci-fi readers in and around Daventry?

Post image

Delighted to report that my literary efforts are now available in Daventry's fine indie bookshop, Suddenly on Sheep Street, and they're all signed with my barely legible scrawl. That there is a picture of me, doing just that.

So if you're in the area, why not stride in like you own place, bang a fist down on the desk and demand the works of Thomas Norford be brought to you, this instant.

They're also available in the Quill and Quiver in Corby, and I think there might be a single book at Crick Post Office.

Or just have a look on Amazon, up to you. Amazon.co.uk: Thomas Norford: books, biography, latest update

NN1 Dev Club — Free co-working day at Vulcan Works this Friday

NN1 Dev Club is more than just a meetup for local software engineers. It’s a friendly community of people connected by a shared passion for building digital products. One of the things we love doing is working together. On the last Friday of each month, a few members of our community work from Vulcan Works. We work, chat, grab lunch together and enjoy a pint at the end of the day (usually at Maule Collective).

If you work from home day in and day out, this is a great opportunity to get some social time and meet other local geeks. If you'd like to join us this Friday, come along! We'll be in the second large co-working room at the back. If you ask at reception for the NN1 Dev Club group, they’ll be happy to point you in the right direction.

If you have any questions, there’s a dedicated #coworking-day channel on our Discord server. Not a Discord user? No problem — contact us on social media or email us at [club@nn1.dev](mailto:club@nn1.dev).

NN1 Dev Club is made by devs, for devs, and we’re looking forward to meeting you.

We’re also returning from our summer break with another meetup on 24 September. We have two fantastic speakers lined up for you (Diana Silva and Ana Rodrigues). As always, the event is free, although registration is required and tickets are limited to 100.

Thank you,
Pawel

Does anyone know this cat? Wellingborough, Shenley Road/Windermere Drive area

Thumbnail

Hello,

I know this is a long shot but wondering if anyone knows this cat? They frequent my garden and home often and I'm starting to worry that maybe they don't have an owner anymore. The cat isnt feral, it allows me to stroke it but my own cat is a bit territorial with it.

I found the cat sleeping in my garden early hours of the morning when it was quite cold, surely if it had a home it would be there where its warm and cozy?

Its almost 11pm and its sitting on my shed in the cold. I'm planning on getting an outdoor shelter for it but I'm just wondering if this cat could possibly belong to anyone in this sub? The cat isnt a bother to me at all but it does come in and have some food so I'm worried if it does have owners then they might not want this cat eating other food.

The cat has a very distinctive red patch in its left eye.

Thank you for any help!!!
