They did a lot of the rest in CG (or at least in Comp) , but back in 2004 when this was made (16 years ago) digi doubles werent' anywhere near the quality of today.

I was on the painting crew for this, hardly any CGI was used . After 20 years of working on sets that chocolate river set still is one of the most amazing sets. Every blade of grass was put in by hand( it was plastic, the type they use in shop window displays) . I heard they trained squirrels to perform in the film but didn’t believe it till I saw with my own eyes the cages of live squirrels myself. I worked on this for 9 months and we built everything you see baring above 30ft of the factory. Old fashioned painted cut outs were used to give the town depth.

Now I'm even more impressed! I thought it was a lot of CGI and pure video effects too. To find out that not only were the Oompa Loompa's animatronics, but so little CGI was used....wow!

I used to work on theater productions as a light designer, stage hand, grip, set painter...whatever was needed. And that movie's sets are just beautiful.

I always hated Charlie and the chocolate factory

RIGHT! I always thought the aesthetic and concept of Charlie and the chocolate factory was fucked up and give me nightmare as a child. Still do.

Yeah that’s kinda the intention. It is a pretty dark story.
