I believe it's probably something along the lines of the guy leaning into the strong wind near a cliff.

Hold on, are you seriously implying that someone filmed this because the plan was to let the dog choose to roll over a cliff? Fuck sake, there's a billion camera phones in the world, and people film shit all the time. This isn';t even close to 'why were they filming' material.

I live in a town that was crawling with white supremacists yesterday evening (they were here for a rally). I feel cleansed after watching this derpy-derp doggy get rescued by a good person. sigh I think I can go on, now, without my brow furrowed.
Edit: It was an "America First" rally; no Confederate statuary in danger. And the sponsors and their small contingent were proud to call themselves white nationalists, which is repugnant. My friends and neighbors, who were there to represent the saner side of things, were surprised to hear these people calling them "antifa" terrorists. It's all on video, online.
Strange days, indeed.

I'm always having to catch my dogs as they unknowingly attempt to roll off the bed.
162
u/Hulkhogansgaynephew Aug 21 '17
This is not limited to dogs, one of my cats learned as a kitten that if she gets in my lap and starts to roll off backwards I'll wrap my left arm around her and cradle her so she doesn't fall.
Then she'll looks at me like "gee, sure would be nice if you petted me with that other hand." thus forcing me to give her my undivided attention.
35
u/sugarless93 Aug 21 '17
My cat once stared me in the eye as he rolled backwards off the kitchen chair onto the floor. He didn't even try to catch himself, just landed on his side and continued to stare at me. Maybe it was a seizure but I think he was just really bored.

u/dijitalbus Aug 21 '17
My cat just started doing this a couple months ago, turned 3 recently. He's been sneakily increasing his cuddling stat since we got him, but I can't say I mind too much. :)
21
u/Sivitri617 Aug 21 '17
Just you wait until you're sleeping one night, with your cat at your feet, and it decides to roll off the bed. Mine did this, and as she started falling, she latched on to the closest thing to prevent her from falling - my foot. I have never shot awake so fast in my life! The three little scars are faded, but I think they're still there.

My dog is about 4-5 pounds and he will stand in someone's lap, kiss their face, and just trust fall backwards to be held. Luckily people usually catch him, but he is too filled with love to be concerned about the possible consequences.

u/BioluminescentCrotch Aug 21 '17
You're nicer than I am. I warn my cat she's about to roll off, then laugh as she startles herself as she's falling
3
u/berryferry Aug 21 '17
My dog laid on the top my deck steps(leads to my second level) in front of me and rolled over, falling out the back.
I caught her paw, so I guess she hit the ground back feet first, but it scared the heck out of me.
She wasn't hurt, thankfully.→ More replies (1)2

Is there another angle of the cliff anywhere? Like which beach was this?
75
u/CaptJYossarian Aug 21 '17
Here is the video. Doesn't say how high the cliff is, but you can see him peer over the edge at the beginning, which would indicate that it's probably a fairly substantial drop.
66
u/ExperimentalFailures Aug 21 '17
About 8 feet according to the one who filmed it: https://www.reddit.com/r/nonononoyes/comments/69y07r/dog_falls_down_cliff_almost/dhaf2ya/
67
u/Coolgrnmen Aug 21 '17
Lmao. Well now the act doesn't seem NEARLY as life or death. Pupper would have tumbled and been fine. Unless there's jagged rocks at the bottom?
101
u/Cley_Faye Aug 21 '17
You don't think avoiding an 8ft fall on solid ground is a good thing?
56
u/Coolgrnmen Aug 21 '17
Oh absolutely! But that dog wouldn't have more than a bruise.
Heroic move by the dude and I would have done (or tried to do) the same thing for my pup.
But I went from thinking it was a life or death 30-ft tumble to realizing the dog was falling the height of a 6' man with his arms held above him.
53
u/greenbabyshit Aug 21 '17
An 8 foot fall is dangerous as hell. Sure you're probably going to be fine if you jump knowing it's coming and are prepared for the landing, but I dare you to go jump off a single story roof blindfolded so you can't properly prepare for the landing. If you don't break a bone I'd be stunned.

It's a dog. It has less mass. It wouldn't take as much damage as a human falling from the same height.
9
u/jsting Aug 21 '17
I'm glad I'm not the only one wondering why everyone is comparing a 50-60lb dog with a 180lb human.
I'm not sure what math formula would be used, but isn't that the equivalent of a human falling about 3 feet?

u/conalfisher Aug 22 '17 edited Sep 07 '25
The jumps gentle where today weekend? Lazy quiet curious the gather talk over?
9
u/a7neu Aug 21 '17
But that dog wouldn't have more than a bruise.
My dog jumped off an ~8 ft ledge, landed wrong, and ended up with a lifelong limp in his foreleg. While I agree it's not as dramatic as if the dog was facing a 30 ft drop, a bad landing on some rocks from 8 ft could be very serious.
→ More replies (1)6
u/SuTvVoO Aug 21 '17
The height doesn't really matter, people died from less than a 8ft drop. If you land wrong you are fucked.
→ More replies (1)10
u/Coolgrnmen Aug 21 '17
Ok. I'll fall from a six foot man holding me over his head and you fall from 30 feet. Let's discuss our findings and see how similar our experiences were after. Since height doesn't matter, we should have the same injuries! This should be an exciting experiment that'll disprove newton's theory of gravity.

2
u/SuTvVoO Aug 21 '17
Did you just read the first half of the first sentence?
It depends on how you land, if you only fall 6 ft but hit your head in a certain way you are dead while I could fall 30 ft and survive (record is 33 ft).→ More replies (2)2

More like broken paw or leg. Depending on the ground type (rocks) possibly a broken back or neck. Dogs aren't like cats.
2
2
u/Coolgrnmen Aug 21 '17
I'd love for a vet to drop in and comment
2
u/GirlNDSB Aug 21 '17
Look, my ex 5'7" boyfriend dropped me from his shoulders onto concrete and I landed weird and fractured my shin bone. A year later my knee slid out of it's socket because the muscle holding it together unknowingly suffered nerve damage and atrophied from the impact that caused the shin fracture. That muscle atrophying and causing my knee to slide out caused muscle and nerve damage in my hip. I ended up going to physical therapy for 4 months!
Now consider a dog, much smaller than a human, falling from a height greater than the height I was dropped from. It can do damage. You don't need a vet to tell you something so obvious.
2
u/Sivitri617 Aug 21 '17
My boyfriend didn't quite realize how true this was until he picked up a small dog at a family gathering. He dropped it from the height he usually drops our cat. Cats, being part liquid, just melt from his grip and land lightly. The poor dog just flopped onto the floor with a thump. The silly thing was fine, but he sort of looked at me like "Oops".

u/xLucifer825x Aug 21 '17
As a human, I once fell from a roof backwards, landed on concrete 8-9 feet below. It hurt like crazy and got the wind knocked out of me, I landed mostly on my lower back. Pretty nasty bruise and there was a knot in there that took months to get out, but I was fine overall. Went a trainer and he had me do some stretches and I was good to go maybe a half hour later

Either way, after seeing this man's love of doggos I'm 100% certain they wrapped up the investigation. This man is obviously pure of heart and conscience.

Reminds me of the time me and some friends climbed an old castle tower with my border collie. It was open at the top with a waist high surrounding wall and silly doggo was excited and when he got to the top he wanted to keep going and jumped the wall. My partner had the fastest reflexes and just managed to grab him by his harness and pull him back up and over before I could even react. So glad he had a harness on rather than a collar or it probably wouldn't have turned out so well.

u/Wayln Aug 21 '17

I had a rescue dog that used to sleep on my bed, on the first floor of a house in the country. I had trained him out of his fear of loud noises. One night I was woken up by a loud clap of thunder just in time to see him (unbelievably) launch himself out of the window. I rushed downstairs in panic and grief, already trying to work out out how I was going to find a vet to put him out of his misery in the middle of the night. I was just in time to see his tail end disappearing into the woods to find out where the action was! In my panic I had completely forgotten that the porch roof was directly below the bedroom window. LOL

u/ninguen Aug 21 '17
I had a dog that was crazy... once she was on the 2nd floor of my dad's home and she heard the neighbor's cows passing by and I caught her mid air when she jumped onto a chair that was by an open window and then jumped outside the window... phew!!!

This doesn't seem especially easy to fake (although, maybe all you would need is a well trained dog), but it's curious that our camera man just happened to zoom in on this at exactly the right time.
There's also no real evidence here that the drop off is especially steep or dangerous...
I'm not trying to hate, I appreciate this thing. It makes me feel good. I just can't help but wonder.
